About Me

One of the many waterfalls in Iceland
One of the many waterfalls in Iceland

Iceland is more than a destination; it is a lesson in the power of nature. It teaches resilience through its people and awe through its landscapes. Whether sitting in a natural hot spring while snow falls or standing on the edge of a continental rift, a visit to Iceland is a reminder of the Earth’s living, breathing complexity.

The nickname "Land of Fire and Ice" is no exaggeration. Iceland sits directly atop the divergent boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This unique position causes the island to literally pull apart by about two centimeters every year, creating a rift valley that runs through the heart of the country.  The Power of Fire Volcanic activity is the heartbeat of Iceland. In recent years, particularly since 2021, the Reykjanes Peninsula has seen a significant "awakening" of volcanic systems that had been dormant for 800 years. These eruptions—characterized by spectacular lava fountains and slow-moving basaltic flows—have reshaped the landscape near the capital region.  While these events have caused local challenges, such as the temporary evacuations of the town of Grindavík, they have also offered a rare glimpse into the creation of new land. Visitors in 2026 can witness these fresh lava fields, a stark reminder that Iceland is still very much under construction by the forces of the Earth.  The Majesty of IceIn contrast to the molten heat of the volcanoes are the massive glaciers that cover roughly 11% of the country. Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in Europe by volume, is a world unto itself. Beneath its shimmering white surface lie hidden volcanoes and subglacial lakes. The glaciers are the source of Iceland’s most iconic sights, including the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Here, massive icebergs break off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and float serenely toward the Atlantic, their deep blue hues shimmering against the black sand of Diamond Beach. However, these giants are also the front lines of climate change; Icelanders are deeply aware of the receding ice and have even held "funerals" for glaciers that have lost their status, such as Okjökull.

If you want a very unique, out of this world experience, book a cruise around Iceland.  I traveled on a Viking cruise starting in New York to Reykjavik, the capital.  I visited Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and the most Eastern part of Canada.  Venturing to Greenland with just 2 stops, we sailed around the island of Iceland.  The beauty of the Northern part is the slow pace of life as the towns are small with few residents.  Getting off the ship in Reykjavik, I was able to spend 3 days traveling the city with its fine restaurants, shopping and its healing waters of the Blue Lagoon and its newest the Sky Lagoon.  Make sure you save time for a day trip around the Golden Circle where you will see beautiful waterfalls, hike through where the Eurasian and the North American tectonic plates meet or tour the Ice Caves and go for a hike on the Solheimajokull Glacier.  The landscape of the Golden Circle tour is something like Mars!

Give me a call or send me an email and I will help you book this Bucket List adventure with my personal experience.
