Antarctica - the bottom of the World

65 Degrees South Latitude - Antarctica

Antarctica - the continent that everyone wants to visit - is the true last frontier.  Owned by no one it is controlled by treaty.  If you adventure plans on landing on its shores the ship can take a maximum of 500 people and only 100 people - lead by a naturalist - can be on its land at any one time.

Several major cruise lines sail to Antarctica, but do not land one the continent.  To me this is like going to the beach and not getting out of your car.  To really see Antarctica and experience the penguins and and other wildlife, you need to go on an expedition ship, that typically leaves from Ushuaia Patagonia Argentina for the 24 hour transit through the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula.

It is expensive.  You typically fly into Buenos Aires and then hop a charter flight to Ushuaia, the southern most city in the world, where you will board your vessel.  To give you an idea of how far south Ushuaia is, Cape Horn, the tip of South Africa, is at th same latitude as Buenos Aires, and it's about a 3  hour flight to Ushuaia.

To say that an expedition to Antarctica is an adventure of a lifetime, is an understatement and does not do justice to just how spectacular it is.
