I have been in the cruise business now for 24 years. I probably took my first River Cruise in 1999, long before most people had even heard of one, and long before many of the well known cruise lines of today were in business. The ships have changed so much from then. They now offer many of the amenities the larger cruise ships offer but on a more streamlined basis. Staterooms and bathrooms are much larger now and more comfortable. The bathroom on my first river cruise wasn't much bigger than a 2 door closet: Toilet, Sink and a very small shower. Now they are made of luxury marble and some feature bathtubs. Many ships offer specialty dining rooms, libraries, swimming pools, hot tubs, balconies, suites, spas and large lounges. I have cruised with most of the major river cruise lines: Viking, Uniworld, AmaWaterways, Avalon and a couple no longer sailing. It is a great way to visit the interior of Europe where the ocean ships cannot get to. They also have several types of themed cruises - Wine cruise and Christmas Markets being the most popular.
