Explora Journeys: Cruising for those who don't like cruising
I need to say this upfront. I am not a cruiser. I never have been. Big ships, formal nights, being herded off in a group for every excursion, none of that ever appealed to me. So when I tell you Explora Journeys won me over, I mean that as someone who came in already skeptical, not someone who loves cruising and is looking for an excuse to talk about another cruise line. That skepticism is actually the whole point of Explora Journeys. The brand doesn't call itself a cruise line. It calls what you're doing a journey, and once you understand why, the name stops sounding like marketing and starts making sense. There are no formal nights. No forced entertainment competing for your evening. It's more like that luxury European hotel that you loved so much, just floating.
It's built more like a residence that happens to move across the ocean than a traditional ship. The suites are where this really shows. Every single accommodation on Explora, all the way down to the entry-level Ocean Terrace Suite, includes a private ocean-facing terrace. There are no interior cabins and no windowless rooms anywhere on the ship. The Ocean Terrace Suite alone runs around 377 square feet, which makes it one of the largest entry-level suites in the ultra luxury cruise category, not a downgrade room you settle for, but a real starting point.
If someone tells you they don't like cruising because the room always feels like an afterthought, this is usually the detail that changes their mind. Dining leans the same direction. Multiple venues, genuinely different cuisines rather than the same menu with a different tablecloth, and a wellness program built into the ship's identity rather than bolted on as an amenity. The whole atmosphere is closer to a boutique hotel than a cruise ship, which is exactly why I recommend it most to clients who have specifically told me cruising isn't for them.
I help clients choose the right suite category and ship for how they actually want to spend their days at sea, and I build in pre and post cruise stays throughout Europe and beyond, private guides, culinary experiences, and thoughtfully chosen hotels, so the whole trip feels like one continuous journey rather than a cruise bookended by flights.
If you have always said cruising isn't for you, I would love the chance to prove you wrong the same way Explora proved it to me!
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Explora Journeys good for people who don't like cruising? It's often the exact answer for that. Explora was designed around a residential, journey-style experience rather than a traditional cruise, with no formal nights, no forced entertainment, and a suite-only fleet where every room includes a private ocean-facing terrace.
What is the entry-level suite like on Explora Journeys?
The Ocean Terrace Suite is around 377 square feet with a private terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows, making it one of the largest entry-level suites in ultra luxury cruising. There are no interior or windowless cabins on the ship at any category.
How is Explora Journeys different from a traditional luxury cruise? Explora leans into a wellness focused, residential feel rather than formal cruise tradition, with flexible dining, a relaxed European atmosphere, and every suite facing the ocean, rather than a rigid schedule of formal nights and set dining times.
Is Explora Journeys worth it if I've never liked cruise ships? For travelers who've been put off by crowding, forced entertainment, or windowless rooms, Explora directly addresses each of those objections, which is exactly why I recommend it to clients who came to me already saying cruising wasn't for them.
Can you build pre and post cruise stays around an Explora Journeys voyage? Yes. I design custom pre and post cruise experiences throughout Europe and beyond, including hotels, private guides, and culinary experiences, so the trip feels like one seamless journey rather than a cruise with travel days tacked on.
