My journey began in Negombo, where the rhythms of the sea set the pace. From there, I boarded a charter flight to Sigiriya, soaring above lush jungles and ancient cities. I climbed the legendary Lion Rock, marveling at its centuries-old frescoes and panoramic views once reserved for kings. At the tranquil Water Gardens Sigiriya, I unwound each evening surrounded by lily ponds and nature. Days were spent exploring the ruins of Polonnaruwa, visiting a local primary school, and participating in an alms-giving ceremony at a forest monastery—an experience that offered a rare glimpse into the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka.

In Kandy, I joined local devotees in evening prayers at the Temple of the Tooth, wandered colonial streets on a historic walking tour, and stayed at a charming boutique hotel, Kings Pavilion, nestled in the hills. Every stop deepened my understanding of the country’s layered cultural narrative.Then came the cool highlands of tea country. At Ceylon Tea Trails’ Castlereagh Bungalow, I stayed in colonial-era elegance among rolling green plantations. There, I hiked Phase 8 of the Pekoe Trail, sipped estate-grown tea by the fire, and learned the delicate art of Sri Lankan cooking in a hands-on curry class with panoramic views of the hills.

One of the most unforgettable moments? Crossing Castlereigh Reservoir by boat to board a seaplane bound for Yala National Park. That scenic flight—gliding above mountains and jungles—was as exhilarating as it was breathtaking.

Upon arrival, I checked into Wild Coast Tented Lodge, where safari meets sophistication. Game drives delivered unforgettable wildlife encounters, from elephants to elusive leopards. I also visited an elephant transit home, where orphaned calves are lovingly rehabilitated and reintroduced to the wild—an emotional and inspiring stop that reminded me of the deep connection between people and nature here.

The journey concluded on the coast at Cape Weligama, where I checked into a stunning ocean-facing villa perched atop the cliffs. Between clifftop sunsets and curated dining, I even tried my hand at stilt fishing—a playful nod to tradition, though I didn’t catch a thing (and loved every second of it). I also explored the Galle Fort on a guided walking tour and inspected the historic luxury of Amangalla, a gem blending colonial grace with modern refinement. My final day in Colombo included a guided city walk that revealed a vibrant mix of old-world charm and modern energy.
