River cruising has been around for decades. It's not as popular in the US since we don't have as many connecting rivers to get a ship through, but in Europe it's huge. Barges used to push commodities through to all the smaller towns are now used to bring tourists through to areas they otherwise may not see.  

Long ships are very different from ocean ships. They don't hold as many people and don't have all the extreme entertainment. That's because the entertainment is your excursions you'll take at each new port you visit each day. River ships cruise at night while you're sleeping. Wake up in a new port and do your yoga or walk on the track on the top deck, have breakfast and then head out on your days excursions and experience everything there is in the new location for the day. Then return to the ship for dinner, some evening entertainment, and then to sleep for the night while you cruise to the next stop.
