I was fortunate enough to visit Japan for just shy of a month a few years back. It certainly was not my most affordable adventure, but it was most definitely my most memorable (especially as far as food was concerned). I spent time in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto with a few day trips to amazing places like Kobe and Nara. Between the lights and technology of the cities to the tranquility of the mountains and forests, the amazing people to the surprising wildlife, I can highly HIGHLY recommend a trip to Japan as soon as you can. Also, never turn down a meal from a local because it was the food I didn't order (and often had no idea what it was) that blew my mind the most. If you're interested in family activities, Disney and Universal also have parks in Japan as well as many temples, museums, and shopping.
