Hi! Scenery from Anchorage to Denali was spectacular! The food was great, too! We saw a bear playing in the river and a moose literally “frolicking”... Read More >
Niest Point Lighthouse hike on the Isle of Skye

When I travel and sight see I like to either schedule a small group tour to a few places I want to see or rent a car and venture out on my own. It seems like every trip I take I learn things I would definitely want to do again as well and things I definitely would not want to do again. This trip had a mix of both! While in Scotland, my husband and I decided to rent a car and drive around to all the sites we wanted to see. Driving on the left side of the road, I’m not going to lie, was intense. I didn’t do the driving but I can’t decide if that was easier on my nerves or worse. We began our Scotland adventure in Inverness where we flew in from England and rented a car. We drove south towards Loch Ness to see what all the excitement was about. The area was incredibly beautiful and green but, sadly, Nessie didn’t make an appearance. We faked a couple of pictures just for fun, gazed at some far away crumbling castles before continuing our adventure.

After searching for the Loch Ness monster we worked up an appetite and at the south end of Loch Ness we found a delicious roadside cafe serving the best fish and chips I had not only on the whole trip but in my whole life. That’s saying a lot considering we ate fish and chips in England and Ireland.

The next day we explored the Isle of Skye starting in the charming coastal town of Portree. Our agenda for the day was to drive out to “Old Man of Storr” which are some craggy mountains that look like they’re straight out of Lord of the Rings. The day was super windy but we made the hike up to what should have been the best view only to find the peaks partially covered with fog. It was still a fun adventure running through the wind and rain while catching glimpses of the stunning landscape all around us.

The next stop on our adventure was Dunvegan Castle & Gardens. We opted for a self-guided tour of the castle and gardens which included a guidebook so we knew what we’re looking at. Wandering through ancient castles and seeing how people lived hundreds of years ago is always super fascinating to me and gives me such a huge sense of gratitude and perspective.

The grand finale of our day on the Isle of Skye was a drive out to see the Niest Point Lighthouse. We saw so many amazing pictures of this place and couldn’t wait to get there. With the super narrow and windy roads 30 miles on a map actually takes a good hour anywhere you drive in Scotland, so plan accordingly. When we were about 1 mile from the point disaster struck when we hit a rock and got a flat tire. That didn’t deter our fun one bit as we limped the car along the last mile and started the hike down to the lighthouse. The views were majestic and stunning and I had to pinch myself that we were actually there seeing it with our own eyes. The cliffs were steep, the water was raging and sheep were busy frolicking as we made our way down the narrow path to the lighthouse. Scotland is truly the land of storybooks and fairy tales and giants.  Now I can’t wait to go back! The next best thing is helping my clients plan their adventures to this amazing land.
