I'm Kim Cook, owner of Love to Travel in Overland Park, Kansas, and river cruising is one of my absolute favorite things to talk about — and book. With over 30 years in the travel industry and hundreds of happy clients, I've watched river cruising grow from a hidden gem into one of the most sought-after travel experiences in the world. And honestly? It deserves every bit of the buzz.
If you're a Kansas City traveler who's been curious about river cruising but has questions — you're in exactly the right place. Let me answer the ones I hear most often.
Is a river cruise right for me if I've never cruised before?
Absolutely — and in fact, river cruising is often easier for first-timers than ocean cruising. The ships are small and intimate, typically carrying 100 to 200 guests, so you're never fighting crowds at the buffet or waiting in long lines to get off the ship. You wake up in a new destination every morning, often right in the heart of a city or village — no tenders, no long bus rides, no wasted time. For Kansas City travelers who love history, culture, and authentic local experiences, river cruising is a near-perfect fit. I've introduced dozens of first-time cruisers to river travel, and almost all of them come home already planning their next one.
How much does a river cruise cost, and what's included?
River cruises are a premium experience, and I want to be upfront about that. Most European river cruises start around $3,000–$4,000 per person and go up from there depending on the line, itinerary, and cabin category. But here's what's important to understand: the value of what's included is exceptional. Most lines bundle meals, onboard beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and guided shore excursions right into the fare — so you're not nickel-and-dimed at every turn the way you might be with other types of travel. When my clients in the Kansas City area sit down and compare what they're actually getting, river cruising often wins on value. My job is to help you find the right line at the right price point for your budget, whether that's a more classic experience or true luxury.
What's the difference between river cruise lines — and how do I choose?
This is the question I get asked most, and it's the one I love most because the answer genuinely matters. Viking, AmaWaterways, Scenic, Emerald Cruises, Avalon Waterways, Tauck, Uniworld — they all sail the same rivers, but the experience on board can be completely different. Some lines are more casual and educational; others lean into ultra-luxury with butler service and all-inclusive fine dining. The cabin sizes, excursion options, onboard atmosphere, and included amenities all vary significantly. Choosing the wrong line for your travel style is one of the biggest mistakes I see, and it's completely avoidable when you work with a specialist. I've done the research, attended the trainings, and in many cases sailed these rivers myself. I can match you to the right line based on who you are as a traveler — not just what the brochure says.
When is the best time to take a river cruise in Europe?
The honest answer is: it depends on what kind of experience you want, and there are trade-offs in every season. Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) offer mild weather, manageable crowds, and some of the most beautiful scenery — vineyards in harvest, fall foliage along the Rhine and Danube. Summer is peak season and tends to sell out early, especially on popular routes. And if Christmas Markets are on your bucket list — and they absolutely should be — November and December sailings book up a year or more in advance. One thing I always advise my clients: book earlier than you think you need to. River cruise inventory is limited, and the best cabins on the best departures go fast. This is not an area where waiting to see if prices drop works in your favor.
Do I really need a travel advisor to book a river cruise, or can I just book online?
You can book online, yes — but you'll be leaving a lot on the table. River cruise lines have group rates, early booking bonuses, shipboard credits, and promotions that aren't always visible on their public websites. As a Travel Leaders Network advisor , I have access to benefits and direct relationships with the major river cruise lines that translate into real savings and added value for my clients. More importantly, I'll be there if something goes wrong — low water levels, itinerary changes, flight disruptions. When you book online, you're on your own. When you book with me, you have an experienced advocate in your corner from the moment you start planning to the moment you get home.
Ready to start planning?
If river cruising is on your radar, I'd love to have a conversation. There's no obligation, no pressure — just a straightforward chat about what you're dreaming of and whether river cruising is the right fit.
