Travel can feel like freedom—but it can also shine a spotlight on the ways our bodies are judged. For LGBTQIA+ travelers, that experience is even more layered. I’ve been reflecting on what it means to truly take up space while on vacation, and how that looks different for every single one of us.
Flying as a person of size
I’m a person of size, and flying always means a bit of planning—sometimes booking an extra seat, sometimes asking for a seatbelt extender. Most of the time, it’s straightforward, but there’s always that flicker of anxiety about how I’ll be perceived. The last time I flew, the ticket agent’s questions felt more like an interrogation than a service. And yes—I did a little mental fist pump when I finally got that extra seat.
Travel is never just logistics
That moment reminded me that travel is never just about logistics—it’s about showing up in our bodies, unapologetically. Size, race, gender expression—these intersections shape how visible, comfortable, or vulnerable we feel on vacation. For trans and non-binary travelers, there’s an added layer of complexity: navigating bathrooms, security lines, and public spaces can come with anxiety, scrutiny, or even outright hostility. These challenges make finding and claiming safe, affirming spaces while traveling even more essential.
Claim your space and embrace your queer body
Everybody belongs in these spaces—the beach, the pool, the plane seat. You deserve to take up space there. No shame. No apology. Just freedom. Embracing your queer body while traveling is about more than comfort—it’s about claiming your right to exist fully, visibly, and joyfully in the world. You belong exactly as you are!
