Let’s be real—flying can be stressful. Long lines, cramped seats, middle-seat anxiety, crying babies… it’s a lot. And for trans travelers, the TSA experience can add an extra layer of tension: unexpected questions, invasive screenings, or just the worry of being misgendered.
Even so, I’ve found some comfort tips that help carve out small pockets of joy—and even a little calm—while in the air:
Prep Your Peace
Before my flight, I download shows and videos from YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu so I can get caught up without buying internet onboard. A little entertainment goes a long way toward keeping my mood light.
Stay Comfortable
I always bring a personal USB chargeable clip fan. It keeps me cool in the terminal, and I can clip it to my luggage or the seat in front of me during the flight. Small tools like this make a big difference.
Ground Yourself
When I start feeling stressed, I use a simple breathing technique: close my eyes and take three deep, slow breaths. Then, I say out loud three things I can feel, three things I can hear, and after opening my eyes, I name three things of the color I first see—finishing with one final breath. It’s simple, but it really helps me feel present and calm.
Celebrate the Micro-Moments
The first sip of coffee, a small cheer when the seatbelt sign turns off, a quiet moment to appreciate being on the way to something new—these little joys matter more than you might think.
Know Your Rights
For trans and nonbinary travelers, familiarizing yourself with TSA guidelines and airport resources can reduce anxiety and help you advocate for yourself if needed.
Accessibility Matters
Many airlines and airports offer services and amenities for travelers with physical or mental disabilities—don’t hesitate to request assistance or accommodations to make your journey smoother.
Flying as a Person of Size
I always take advantage of airlines that refund the extra seat and ask for a safety belt extender. It’s a simple step that makes my flight more comfortable and safe.Flying will never be completely stress-free, but these comfort tips help shift the focus from just surviving to actually being present.Because travel doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.
