Riviera River Cruise on the Rhine River

As a Boise travel agent, I'm always seeking out new experiences to bring the best travel options to my clients. In October 2023, I had the privilege of embarking on a FAM (familiarization) trip with Riviera Travel aboard the MS Geoffrey Chaucer for a Rhine River cruise. This journey was filled with picturesque towns, historic landmarks, and unforgettable experiences. I even brought my mom along for the ride, making it a special mother-daughter adventure.

First Impressions: Cologne to Koblenz

Upon arriving in Cologne from Frankfurt, we made our way to the ship, the MS Geoffrey Chaucer. The ship was fairly empty, but we immediately settled in to our lovely cabin with a French balcony overlooking the Rhine river.

Our first full day on the cruise took us to Koblenz, a charming town where we docked in the afternoon. The Deutsches Eck was a highlight for me — a massive, historical monument where the Moselle and Rhine rivers meet. Wandering through the streets of Koblenz was an enchanting experience.

Rüdesheim: Coffee, Castles, and Cobblestones

The next day brought us to Rüdesheim, a delightful little town famous for its picturesque streets and, of course, the iconic Rüdesheim coffee. After a morning spent on the top deck of the ship, soaking in the views of castles and forested hillsides, we docked in the early afternoon. Riviera offers one complimentary tour per port, so I joined a walking tour through the old town. While it was fairly basic, it gave me a good overview of the area.

Rüdesheim coffee, a delicious concoction of coffee, Asbach brandy, sugar, and whipped cream, was an absolute treat. I spent the afternoon exploring on my own, enjoying a pretzel and wandering the cobblestone streets before returning to the ship for dinner and a fun round of trivia in the lounge.

Speyer and Strasbourg: History and Culture

Speyer was another gem on our itinerary. Although I skipped the guided tour, I ventured out with a few others to the Technik Museum Speyer, a treasure trove of interactive exhibits and historical displays. If you're a fan of planes, trains, and automobiles, this museum is a must-visit.

Strasbourg, with its mix of French and German influences, was a highlight for both me and my mom. We explored the Strasbourg Cathedral, marveled at the intricate architecture, and enjoyed the quaint charm of the Tanner's District.

Breisach and Titisee: Biking and the Black Forest

Breisach was a peaceful stop where I borrowed a bike from the ship and spent the day exploring the hilly town. The ride was challenging, but the stunning views from St. Stephen's Minster and the quiet streets made it worthwhile. Meanwhile, my mom joined a tour of the Black Forest near Titisee, which she absolutely loved. The feedback from other travelers on the tour was equally positive.

Exploring Lucerne and Beyond

One of the highlights of our Rhine River cruise was the day we spent in Lucerne, Switzerland. After enjoying a quick and early breakfast, we picked up our simple packed lunches and set off for Lucerne.

Lucerne is a picturesque town nestled between the stunning Lake Lucerne and the towering Swiss Alps. Although our time there was brief, the charm of the town was undeniable. We wandered through the historic streets, admired the iconic Chapel Bridge, and took in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Next, we embarked on a journey through the Bernese Oberland to Wilderswil. From there, we boarded a train to Schynige Platte, a scenic route that offered unparalleled views of the alpine landscape. The journey was nothing short of magical, with towering peaks, lush valleys, and serene lakes. Schynige Platte itself is a paradise for nature lovers, offering hiking trails, panoramic views, and a tranquil atmosphere. I enjoyed a quiet hike and a local beer overlooking the amazing view.
