Enjoying the up close view of the hippos!

Did you know that Walt Disney World offers amazing experiences beyond the regular attractions and shows in the theme parks? A truly unforgettable one is the Wild Africa Trek at Animal Kingdom. I highly recommend this experience, and to date, is my most favorite adventure I've experienced at Walt Disney World.

It's not your typical theme park attraction — it's a private, guided tour that takes you off the beaten path and into the heart of the Harambe Wildlife Reserve.

The adventure begins with a small group accompanied by expert guides (who have a wealth of information about animals and are skilled at Disney storytelling). You’re outfitted with a safety harness, gear vest, and water bottle, and embark on a light hike through tropical forest trails. Along the way, you’ll stop at various lookout points to observe animals like monkeys, hippos, and more. We were able to watch the hippos being fed during this up close viewing.

One of the most thrilling elements of the trek was crossing suspension rope bridges directly above a pool of Nile crocodiles (fully harnessed for safety, of course). It can be a little scary, but it is so worth it!!!

Next, you'll board a custom safari vehicle (which is different from the Kilimanjaro Safaris trucks) and you'll enjoy a leisurely ride through the savanna. Because it’s a private tour, your driver can pause for extended periods to give you more time with elephants, giraffes, antelope, wildebeest, and other African wildlife. We were able to get really amazing photos during this time and the giraffes came right up to our vehicle.

Midway through the safari ride, you’ll stop at the Boma Overlook, a serene private safari overlook nestled in the savanna. You get to relax in this beautiful viewing area while enjoying African-inspired snacks and drinks — all while watching animals roam freely in the savanna. Here, you'll enjoy a light meal of African-inspired snacks such as: garlic and leek hummus and pita, prosciutto and mozzarella, olive mix, fresh fruit, chicken wrap, marinated tandoori shrimp, jungle juice or bottled water. The offerings can vary slightly depending on the time of day.

This not-to-miss experience is perfect for adventure-seekers or animal lovers!
