About Me

The windmills of Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece
The windmills of Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece

The Cyclades are a group of roughly two dozen islands in the Aegean. Santorini and Mykonos dominate most conversations about Greece, but some of the best islands in the group barely come up. A good Cyclades islands vacation looks different depending on whether you want one island done properly or a route through several.

WHAT KIND OF CYCLADES VACATION ARE YOU PLANNING?

Here are the travelers I work with most on the Cyclades. If yours looks different, reach out anyway.

  • First-Time Visitors: You have a shortlist and are not sure you are making the right call. Most first-timers do both Santorini and Mykonos: Santorini for the caldera and cliff-edge dinners that book months out, Mykonos for the beaches, Chora harbor, and a couple of nights of energy before heading somewhere quieter.

  • Couples and Honeymooners: You have been talking about this trip and are not sure which island fits the two of you. A good Santorini travel agent knows Santorini suits couples who want drama and occasion, Folegandros is right if quiet is the point, and Milos is the answer if dramatic coastline with almost no crowds is what you are after.

  • Families with Children: You want the kids to come home having actually seen something. Naxos and Paros cover it well: Agios Prokopios on Naxos is calm enough for young swimmers, Naxos Town holds older kids without feeling like a museum, and Naoussa on Paros adds a livelier harbor with beaches that work for every age.

  • The Island Explorer: You have done the famous ones and are ready for something different. Syros lands you in Ermoupoli, a neoclassical harbor town unlike the rest of the group. Tinos rewards slow walking and serious food. Andros has a contemporary art museum that holds its own anywhere in Europe, known to very few visitors.

WHAT WORKING WITH A CYCLADES TRAVEL AGENT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE

First and foremost, my native fluency in Greek and my 30+ visits to Greece give me a unique edge on planning any vacation to Greece, including the Cyclades Islands. I have personally visited and continue to visit on a frequent basis many of the islands each year, so my advice is grounded rather than generic. That means knowing which Santorini hotels actually deliver the caldera view, which Mykonos beach clubs are worth it in season, and which Milos guesthouses sit closest to the best swimming. As your Cyclades travel agent, dining and island logistics get built into one plan. Clients managing sensitive itineraries will find that handled quietly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How many days do I need on each island?
A: Most Cyclades islands are best done in three to four days. They are small, and you will feel it if you overstay. Ten days is usually enough for two or three islands at a comfortable pace.

Q: When is the best time to visit the Cyclades?
A: Late May through June is the sweet spot: warm water, everything open, fewer crowds than August. September works just as well, and prices are lower.

Q: Which Cyclades island is right for me?
A: Santorini is the caldera views, cave hotels above Oia, and volcanic wine country. Mykonos is the beaches, the nightlife, and the cosmopolitan harbor at Chora. Paros and Naxos are the strongest all-rounders: good beaches, good food, and an easy pace. Milos has the most dramatic coastline in the group, at Kleftiko and Sarakiniko. Ios sits between Santorini and Naxos and runs livelier than either.

Sifnos has built a real reputation for food, punching well above its size for tavernas and chefs who take sourcing seriously. Serifos is gaining ground with travelers who want raw Cycladic landscape, serious hiking, and almost no crowds. Folegandros and Antiparos are small, quiet, and unhurried. Syros has neoclassical architecture and a real town feel that most Cyclades islands lack. Tinos and Andros have strong local culture and fewer visitors than their size deserves.

For those going further, Amorgos, Koufonisia, Donousa, Kimolos, Anafi, Kythnos, and Kea (also called Tzia) take more planning to reach but reward the effort.

READY TO PLAN YOUR CYCLADES ISLANDS VACATION?

The best rooms in Santorini fill up well before summer. When you have a timeframe in mind, reach out and we will build the trip from there.

A perfect Mallorca experience
Reviewed By Makis S. - Deerfield, IL | Traveled to Balearic Islands ~ Spain ~ Europe
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Trip of a lifetime!
Reviewed By Nancy P. - Arlington Heights, IL | Traveled to Europe
My husband and I planned an ambitious European trip and Steven made it happen. He was able to take our wishes and plan an itinerary which we thoroughly enjoyed. He worked with us as we fine tuned our plans, gave us options to choose from, and answered all of our questions. We were grateful that prior to our trip he checked in to be sure we had taken care of the items we needed to handle. During our trip we experienced a train delay which caused us to miss a connecting train and Steven was able to give us guidance so we could reach our destination. It was a pleasure to work with Steven, he showed real interest in our plans, and checked in once we returned. Thanks Steven!

The balance was perfect; a fantastic mix of planned activities and personal time to explore. The meetings to pre-plan the trip were concise, helpful and relevant. Lots of great moments. Petra and Bethany by the Jordan were both highlights. It exceeded my expectations.

Patagonia anniversary success
Steve was great to work with. We planned our trip in late January for November, and he guided us through it all and stayed on top of it following up with us in the fall and even checked in on the trip and after. It was great to have an expert who has traveled there really give us his recommendations. He nailed the whole trip out of the park and was one of the best life changing vacations we have taken. It was extra special because we celebrated our 20th anniversary.
