About Me

Hot air balloons over Cappadocia, Turkey, Türkiye
Hot air balloons over Cappadocia, Turkey, Türkiye

Istanbul is where most Turkey trips start and often where the planning stops, which means a lot of people come home having only seen one city. A Turkey vacation that takes in Cappadocia's valleys, the Bodrum peninsula's Aegean coast, and the archaeological depth of Ephesus and the southeast is a different trip entirely, and figuring out which combination fits you is where the real planning starts.

HOW YOUR TURKEY VACATION SHAPES THE TRIP WE BUILD

The trip takes a very different shape depending on what you want from Türkiye.

  • Families: Your kids are old enough to get something real out of a trip, and you want the itinerary to prove it. A balloon ride over Cappadocia at sunrise, a morning inside the Topkapi Treasury, and a day at Ephesus where the whole ancient city is the attraction tend to hold a teenager's attention better than a beach does. I build the pacing around those moments so the adults can enjoy the trip too.

  • Couples: You've done the Greek islands and you're looking for something with a little more edge to it. Bodrum has built a real hotel scene over the past decade, with clifftop properties, good restaurants, and a stretch of coastline that moves at a slower pace. I put together itineraries that move between a cave suite at the Museum Hotel in Urgup, a few nights on a Blue Cruise between Bodrum and Marmaris, and a room facing the Bosphorus at the Ciragan Palace in Istanbul.

  • History & Culture Travelers: Turkey is the trip you've been building toward, and you want someone who can get you past the standard sites. I match clients in this group with regional specialists who work specific areas of the country. One focuses on Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul, another knows the southeast well enough to route you through Gobekli Tepe and Gaziantep, sites that still sit well outside the standard tourist circuit.

  • Wellness & Slow Travelers: This trip needs to come back with you feeling different than when you left. Six Senses Kaplankaya on the Aegean is one of the few properties that pairs a serious medical wellness program with food worth eating. For a slower itinerary with some cultural weight to it, I build around a hammam session in Istanbul, a few days near Bodrum, and a long finish at a clifftop property with nothing that asks anything of you.

WHAT WORKING WITH A TÜRKIYE TRAVEL ADVISOR ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE

Most travel advisors who say they cover Turkey have been to Istanbul. The useful knowledge is narrower than that. I know which cave suite category at the Museum Hotel is worth the extra cost, whether a Bodrum week falls before or after the crowds shift the experience, and which guide in Cappadocia is actually worth requesting. For clients drawn to food culture in Gaziantep or the archaeology in the southeast, I match the planning to that interest rather than the other way around. For clients whose lives require more discretion in how a trip gets arranged, that side of things is handled as part of the work.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: When is the best time to visit Turkey?
A: May and June are the sweet spot for Istanbul and the historical sites. The weather is reliable, everything is running, and the summer crowds haven't arrived yet. The Aegean coast holds up well through October. Cappadocia works year-round, though the balloon rides are weather-dependent and the shoulder months bring smaller groups and more room in the valleys.

Q: Do Americans need a visa, and what should I know about currency and tipping?
A:
No visa needed as of a couple of years ago. Türkiye's lira is favorable for U.S. travelers right now, so the cost-per-night gap between here and Western Europe is real. Tipping at restaurants runs around ten percent. A small tip for hotel staff who assist you is appropriate.

A perfect Mallorca experience
Reviewed By Makis S. - Deerfield, IL | Traveled to Balearic Islands ~ Spain ~ Europe
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Trip of a lifetime!
Reviewed By Nancy P. - Arlington Heights, IL | Traveled to Europe
My husband and I planned an ambitious European trip and Steven made it happen. He was able to take our wishes and plan an itinerary which we thoroughly enjoyed. He worked with us as we fine tuned our plans, gave us options to choose from, and answered all of our questions. We were grateful that prior to our trip he checked in to be sure we had taken care of the items we needed to handle. During our trip we experienced a train delay which caused us to miss a connecting train and Steven was able to give us guidance so we could reach our destination. It was a pleasure to work with Steven, he showed real interest in our plans, and checked in once we returned. Thanks Steven!

The balance was perfect; a fantastic mix of planned activities and personal time to explore. The meetings to pre-plan the trip were concise, helpful and relevant. Lots of great moments. Petra and Bethany by the Jordan were both highlights. It exceeded my expectations.

Patagonia anniversary success
Steve was great to work with. We planned our trip in late January for November, and he guided us through it all and stayed on top of it following up with us in the fall and even checked in on the trip and after. It was great to have an expert who has traveled there really give us his recommendations. He nailed the whole trip out of the park and was one of the best life changing vacations we have taken. It was extra special because we celebrated our 20th anniversary.
