About Me

Ksamil, Albania
Ksamil, Albania

Albania sits on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, sandwiched between Greece and Montenegro, and most Americans have never seriously considered it. That is starting to change. The southern coastline runs turquoise for miles, the interior has Ottoman stone towns that predate most of what you would see in Western Europe, and the Albanian Alps in the north look nothing like the rest of the Mediterranean. Traveling to Albania covers more ground than most people realize, and the question worth asking is which version fits what you actually want.

YOUR ALBANIA VACATION STARTS WITH KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE AFTER

Albania draws a wide range of travelers. Here are a few I work with most:

  • Slow-Travel Couples: A week based in Saranda or Ksamil moves at a completely different pace than a typical Mediterranean trip. The southern coast is unhurried, the water is that color, and a rental car opens up the Blue Eye spring, the Butrint ruins, and a morning at Gjirokastrër Castle before the crowds arrive. An Albania vacation built this way stretches a U.S. budget into something that feels right at every meal and every night’s sleep.

  • Families: Albania works well for families when the itinerary has some substance to it. Most trips start in Tirana, where Skanderbeg Square and the National History Museum give younger travelers a grounding in the country before heading south. The ancient Illyrian ruins at Apollonia and an afternoon inside Berat’s castle quarter, where Albanian families still live within the old walls, are the kind of stops a twelve-year-old actually remembers. I factor in the new Vlora International Airport serving the Riviera directly and build a pace that holds everyone.

  • Off the Beaten Path: Albania has two very different personalities depending on where you go. The Albanian Alps, including the Valbona Valley and the trails around Theth, run cool through July and August and look nothing like what most people picture when they think of this corner of Europe. I build a trip that spends real time up north before coming down to a few nights along the Albanian Riviera, where the water color alone tends to stop people mid-sentence.

  • Active Groups: The Vjosa is one of Europe’s last large wild rivers, and a multi-day rafting run on it is the kind of thing a group of friends talks about for years. I build the active component, find the right guesthouses along the way, and frame the whole trip with a few nights in Tirana’s Blloku so there is energy at both ends.

HOW I PLAN ALBANIA TRIPS FOR MY CLIENTS

I maintain direct relationships with lodge owners in the north and Riviera villa operators, which puts my clients in front of properties that fill fast and rarely appear through a standard search. For trips built around the Vjosa or the Via Dinarica trail, I match you with a guide who knows that specific section rather than a generalist. Clients who want Albania luxury travel handled at a higher level of coordination find that side of things managed without fanfare.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: When is the right time to visit, and does the coast get crowded?
A: June and September are the strongest months. August has gotten noticeably busier around Ksamil and Saranda. If the Accursed Mountains are part of the plan, July and August are the better window for hiking. I build the calendar around your priorities, not the peak season defaults.

Q: Do I need cash, and how does getting around the country work?
A: Albania uses the lek, and cash matters outside Tirana. Cards work in the capital and larger coastal towns, but northern villages and smaller Riviera spots still run on cash. The Llogara Tunnel, opened in 2024, cut transit times to the south considerably. Every client gets a logistics brief before departure.

Q: Is Albania worth adding on to a broader regional trip?
A: For the right itinerary, yes. Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor is under two hours from Shkodër by road, and Corfu is a short ferry from Saranda. The country pairs naturally with northern Greece for anyone tracing Illyrian and Byzantine history across two coastlines.

A perfect Mallorca experience
Reviewed By Makis S. - Deerfield, IL | Traveled to Balearic Islands ~ Spain ~ Europe
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Trip of a lifetime!
Reviewed By Nancy P. - Arlington Heights, IL | Traveled to Europe
My husband and I planned an ambitious European trip and Steven made it happen. He was able to take our wishes and plan an itinerary which we thoroughly enjoyed. He worked with us as we fine tuned our plans, gave us options to choose from, and answered all of our questions. We were grateful that prior to our trip he checked in to be sure we had taken care of the items we needed to handle. During our trip we experienced a train delay which caused us to miss a connecting train and Steven was able to give us guidance so we could reach our destination. It was a pleasure to work with Steven, he showed real interest in our plans, and checked in once we returned. Thanks Steven!

The balance was perfect; a fantastic mix of planned activities and personal time to explore. The meetings to pre-plan the trip were concise, helpful and relevant. Lots of great moments. Petra and Bethany by the Jordan were both highlights. It exceeded my expectations.

Patagonia anniversary success
Steve was great to work with. We planned our trip in late January for November, and he guided us through it all and stayed on top of it following up with us in the fall and even checked in on the trip and after. It was great to have an expert who has traveled there really give us his recommendations. He nailed the whole trip out of the park and was one of the best life changing vacations we have taken. It was extra special because we celebrated our 20th anniversary.
