About Me

Aman Sveti Stefan Hotel in Budva, Montenegro
Aman Sveti Stefan Hotel in Budva, Montenegro

Montenegro doesn't need a hard sell. The Bay of Kotor is an inland sea ringed by medieval walls, Venetian church towers, and mountains that drop straight to the water's edge. Spend a morning on Kotor's ramparts and an evening at a marina-side table in Tivat, and the country opens in layers.

WHAT KIND OF MONTENEGRO TRIP IS RIGHT FOR YOU

The travelers heading here are more varied than a single Adriatic postcard suggests.

  • Couples Seeking a High-End Adriatic Escape: Montenegro is the natural next step for couples who've done the Amalfi Coast and want something that doesn't feel overrun. The luxury hotels in Montenegro worth knowing are a short list: One&Only Portonovi in Herceg Novi, Regent Porto Montenegro in Tivat, and the Aman at Sveti Stefan for those wanting a private island to themselves. For milestone trips, the itinerary anchors to one flagship property, with Perast and the Blue Cave as the day excursions.

  • Travelers Adding Montenegro to a Balkan or Croatia Trip: Most Americans arrive overland from Dubrovnik, making Kotor Old Town the natural first stop on a Balkan circuit. Two nights covers the city walls, the San Giovanni fortress, dinner of black risotto and Vranac wine, and the boat to Lady of the Rocks in Perast. For travelers also eyeing Albania or Bosnia, Montenegro fits cleanly as the scenic centerpiece.

  • Active Travelers Who Want Adventure Without Sacrificing Comfort: Durmitor National Park is a different country from the coast. The Tara River Canyon is the deepest in Europe, rafting runs May through October, and the trails above Žabljak are legitimately wild. After a day on the water, the right mountain lodge makes the difference, and I sort that well in advance.

  • Families Looking for a Safe, High-Service European Summer: Luštica Bay has become the default for family trips. It's a pedestrian-friendly resort village with calm, swimmable water, a kids' club, and proper resort-level service. Parents get spa time and quiet mornings while kids have the bay for boat trips and swimmable beaches.

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO WORK WITH A MONTENEGRO SPECIALIST

In Montenegro, the gap between a well-positioned boutique and a generic coastal resort is wider than it looks, and that's where planning starts. My supplier relationships across the Bay of Kotor region put me in direct conversation with property managers at the Regent, One&Only, and Chedi Luštica Bay on room categories, view allocation, and availability before you commit. For trips that call for something beyond a hotel, Aman Sveti Stefan occupies its own island off Budva and remains the most-requested address for clients who need complete separation from the outside world. Montenegro's compact footprint makes it ideal for pairing the coast and Durmitor, and I match you with mountain operators at the same standard as the coastal properties.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: When is the best time to visit Montenegro?
A: May through June and September into early October hit the sweet spot of warm water, comfortable temperatures, and a fraction of the July-August crowds. For summer dates, I focus on properties with their own beach access and early-morning excursions.

Q: Do I need to worry about currency or language?
A: Montenegro uses the euro, which simplifies budgeting. English is widely spoken on the coast and at most properties. The old towns of Kotor and Budva are pedestrian-only inside the walls. A local SIM card is worth having for the drive north to Durmitor.

Q: Is Montenegro worth combining with Croatia?
A: Most itineraries I build pair 3 to 5 nights in Montenegro with Split or Dubrovnik, connected by a transfer along the Adriatic coast that takes under two hours. Bosnia-Herzegovina or Albania rounds out a two-week trip without adding long travel days.

A perfect Mallorca experience
Reviewed By Makis S. - Deerfield, IL | Traveled to Balearic Islands ~ Spain ~ Europe
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Trip of a lifetime!
Reviewed By Nancy P. - Arlington Heights, IL | Traveled to Europe
My husband and I planned an ambitious European trip and Steven made it happen. He was able to take our wishes and plan an itinerary which we thoroughly enjoyed. He worked with us as we fine tuned our plans, gave us options to choose from, and answered all of our questions. We were grateful that prior to our trip he checked in to be sure we had taken care of the items we needed to handle. During our trip we experienced a train delay which caused us to miss a connecting train and Steven was able to give us guidance so we could reach our destination. It was a pleasure to work with Steven, he showed real interest in our plans, and checked in once we returned. Thanks Steven!

The balance was perfect; a fantastic mix of planned activities and personal time to explore. The meetings to pre-plan the trip were concise, helpful and relevant. Lots of great moments. Petra and Bethany by the Jordan were both highlights. It exceeded my expectations.

Patagonia anniversary success
Steve was great to work with. We planned our trip in late January for November, and he guided us through it all and stayed on top of it following up with us in the fall and even checked in on the trip and after. It was great to have an expert who has traveled there really give us his recommendations. He nailed the whole trip out of the park and was one of the best life changing vacations we have taken. It was extra special because we celebrated our 20th anniversary.
