Most travelers have been to or heard of the Punta Cana area of the Dominican Republic. Puerta Plata is on the northeastern tip of the Dominican Republic.    My husband and I traveled to Puerta Plata.  In Punta Cana, you stay on your resort.  There is no town to visit, just beaches.  In Puerta Plata, you can walk into the town and explore or you can book an adventure.  My husband and some friends walked into town and watched the locals playing baseball (The favorite pastime of the people.)  I drank the water so you know where I was for awhile.  (don't even have ice in your drinks)

Puerta Plata is known for it's lush rainforests, sunny beaches, whale watching,  and water sports.  There is an abundance of leisure activities from gambling to parks to shopping.  

There are many adventures you can book this area - 27 Waterfalls in Amber Cove, cable car ride up the mountain, catamaran with snorkeling, visit a Rum Factory, chocolate making factory and more.  How about a buggy ride through the sugar cane fields, up the mountain and down to the beach.   I do suggest you book the adventures ahead and to not book it with someone on the streets.  You want to be safe!!

As far as where to stay, there are all-inclusive hotels for adults only and smaller hotels for adults only.  There are hotels for families, also.
