Exploring the Edge of the Earth: Aboard NCL Prima – Iceland to Norway, June 2024 In June 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to sail aboard the elegant Norwegian Prima on one of the most breathtaking itineraries available in Northern Europe — a 10-day journey from Reykjavik, Iceland to the majestic fjords of Norway. This sailing wasn't just a cruise; it was an unforgettable adventure across volcanic landscapes, coastal villages, and Arctic wonders.
Ship Spotlight: Norwegian Prima The Prima is NCL’s first of a new class — and she truly lives up to her name. Sleek, modern, and full of spacious lounges, elevated dining, and thoughtfully designed public spaces, the ship feels like a floating boutique hotel. From the stunning Infinity Beach to the intimate Observation Lounge, every inch invites you to soak in the surrounding beauty.
Day 1–2: Reykjavik, Iceland We began in Reykjavik, a vibrant mix of urban energy and geothermal charm. Many of us explored the Golden Circle, stood in awe at Gullfoss Waterfall, and bathed in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon. Iceland’s midnight sun bathed the city in gold until late, setting the perfect tone for the days to come.
Day 3: Ísafjörður, Iceland Nestled in the Westfjords, Ísafjörður is rugged, remote, and full of soul. We wandered through colorful fishing villages, sampled Icelandic pastries, and took an optional excursion to see Dynjandi, one of Iceland’s most picturesque waterfalls. Wildlife lovers spotted puffins and seals, while the sheer cliffs and snow-dusted peaks left a lasting impression.
Day 4: Akureyri, Iceland Known as the “Capital of North Iceland,” Akureyri gave us easy access to jaw-dropping scenery — Lake Mývatn, Godafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), and bubbling geothermal fields. The blend of lava landscapes and peaceful fjords was surreal, and the town itself was friendly and walkable, with charming cafes and shops.
Day 5: At Sea A sea day gave us a chance to unwind. We strolled The Waterfront, caught live performances at the Prima Theater, and indulged in specialty dining. For thrill seekers, the Prima Speedway and Drop waterslide brought plenty of excitement. The spa was a favorite among many — especially with ocean-view saunas and hot stone loungers.
Day 6: Ålesund, Norway Our first stop in Norway was the stunning art nouveau city of Ålesund. Surrounded by water and built across several islands, it’s one of the most photogenic towns in Scandinavia. The hike to Aksla Viewpoint rewarded us with panoramic views of the city and the surrounding fjords. Charming architecture and fresh seafood rounded out the day.
Day 7: Olden, Norway Olden was like sailing into a postcard. Towering mountains, emerald lakes, and deep valleys greeted us. We ventured to the Briksdal Glacier, part of the larger Jostedalsbreen Glacier. Some rode troll cars up, others hiked — all were awestruck. The stillness of the Norwegian landscape was humbling and divine.
Day 8: Geiranger, Norway Next came Geiranger, often called the crown jewel of Norway’s fjords — and rightly so. The sail-in alone, past Seven Sisters Waterfall, was enough to make your jaw drop. We took scenic excursions to Eagle’s Bend, cruised the fjord by small boat, or hiked the green hills. Every view here was majestic.
Day 9: Bergen, Norway Bergen, with its colorful Bryggen Wharf and cobbled alleys, was our final port before disembarkation. Many took the Fløibanen Funicular up Mount Fløyen or wandered the fish market. It was a bittersweet farewell — the gateway to the fjords and a perfect end to our Northern European journey.
This itinerary was not only a showcase of natural beauty — it was a spiritual refresh. Between Iceland’s elemental drama and Norway’s fairytale fjords, every port carried a story, every view whispered peace. The Norwegian Prima brought comfort, luxury, and connection at every turn.Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or dreaming of your first bucket-list voyage, this sailing offers the adventure of a lifetime — a deep breath of fresh Arctic air and wonder.
