About Me

Crossing The Atlantic
Crossing The Atlantic

If you are considering a transatlantic cruise, it is of immense value to get advice from someone that takes them regularly, because they are unlike every other cruise out there, and you may be surprised to learn how amazing they can be!

In other words, we are your people!

Why Take a Transatlantic Cruise ?

There was a time when transatlantic cruising was the way to go when moving between Europe and America. It was replaced by the luxury of flying and getting overseas so quickly, transatlantic cruising became a thing of the past, and cruises made the voyage simply for the purpose of repositioning their ships and crew.

Transatlantic cruising later became slightly popular for people that preferred not to fly or were looking for a great deal. These "repositioning" cruises were extremely inexpensive, but the trade-off was that there was not much going on during the voyage, so it could become quite boring. Additionally, the Atlantic can get rough, so the voyage was not always "smooth sailing"

But things have changed!

Nowadays, the transatlantic crossing has mad a major revival! Newer and larger ships offer so much to do during the sea days, that it is difficult to get bored. After all, many newer cruise ships are in and of themselves, destinations. Additionally, larger ships with major advances in stabilization technology make it so that even in rough weather you don't feel the movement nearly as much as you once did. Additionally, the cruise lines tend to alter their routes to navigate around the rough weather more than ever, making transatlantic crossings a truly fantastic experience!

Who is a Trans-Atlantic Cruise for?

While it was once common that only elderly retired people would take these cruises, it has become less and less so over time. More young adults, people that work remotely, and even some families choose a transatlantic as part of their trip to Europe, either cruising to Europe in the Spring, then enjoying a trip and flying back, or flying to Europe for an Autumn vacation, and cruising back.

Are All of Those Sea Days Boring?

Generally, on a transatlantic cruise, you will have six to eight days at sea. Some people think they will be stuck, cooped up in a ship. But the reality is that with today's larger ships, there is just so much going on that you can do as much, or as little as you like. Consider that these modern ships are often between 150,000 and 250,000 tons, 10 to 20 times larger than the ships of just 25 years ago. With countless restaurant venues, entertainment venues, and activities going on, you can do as much, or as little as you want. The entertainment rotates enough that you don't feel the repetition, and best of all, these cruises are not as crowded as many of the traditional Caribbean cruises are. So you truly get so much more out of it.

Working Remotely on a Transatlantic Cruise

Nowadays, Internet connections on ships are getting faster and faster, making it possible to work while on the ship. Michael lives half the year in Europe and half in the United States. He actually take transatlantic cruises in both directions as part of his commute! We absolutely love working on board. We will get three or four hours of work done with the Internet connection we have on the ship, and enjoy all of the amenities of the ship the rest of the day. We even find ourselves to be significantly more productive while working on the ship. And we are by no means alone! When we cross, we see more and more people with their laptops open, and they often tell us they work remotely and see the world like this!

Transatlantic Group Cruises & Tours to and from Italy

Each year sun the spring, we set up a group cruise from Florida to Italy, followed by one of our company's all-inclusive, Immersive Wine & Culinary tours in Italy (culturediscovery.com). In the Autumn we do the reverse, starting with a tour in Italy, and ending with a cruise back to The United States. We provide everything, from transfers at the port in Italy to all of the food, wine, tours, and experiences. Naturally, if you are not interested in one of our tours, I can pair you up with another cruise/tour package anywhere in Europe.

Pro Tips:

Ship Choice: We personally love small and intimate ships for shorter cruises or cruises with more port stops. But when crossing the Atlantic, we want to go BIG. If all you are looking for is peace and quiet, and you love the motion of the ocean, smaller ships can be the experience of a lifetime!

Internet: Depending on your desires, this may not be important to you. But if it is, choosing the right ship and the right Internet package can make all the difference. Knowing some tricks can matter as well. For example, when Michael is going to bed at night, he may want to stream a movie, and the ship choices are extremely limited. If that matters to you, Talk to us! We can give you the secrets to streaming your Netflix on the TV right in your room while aboard!

I won't let anyone else organize my groups!
Reviewed By Linda - Los Angeles, CA | Traveled to Mediterranean ~ At Sea ~ At Sea
I have been traveling with Michael and Culture Discovery for over a decade on my group trips. Michael and his team are so good that they know my desires better than I do. With every group I have put together, I have given Michael a basic idea what I wanted, and he delivered ten times what I was hoping for. Every trip has been the trip[ of a lifetime, from ground tours to cruises, he has always delivered 1,000%
Michael, Maggie & Rich - Culture Discovery responded

What every group planner should be!
Reviewed By Dick R. - Melbourne, FL | Traveled to Italy ~ Europe
I am part of a travel club for a large community, and first met Michael when we contacted him to do an Italy tour for a group of up to 45 people. We have had many agencies and tour companies before, but the way Michael presented for us was like nothing we had ever seen. His presentation in front of 500 members of our club was so successful that the tour sold out in 3 days and had a waiting list.

He came for another presentation for our group to finalize everything, and finally the tour happened. I have been to Italy many times, and this was the best we have ever experienced. The Vatican at night after it closed, our luggage waiting in our rooms with each hotel change, personalized gifts at each location, a sense of friendship along the way. It was more than perfect. Like no other tour we had ever been on.

He is now the only person we use for our groups. Cruises, tours, and more. We are currently planning a large group cruise with him, and a tour in Portugal for next year.
Michael, Maggie & Rich - Culture Discovery responded
"Thanks! You guys are absolutely the best, and such a pleasure. Every group you have had has been an honor to arrange (and our whole team loves you). I am so happy I will be with you on the group cruise next year, and then Portugal... it is going to knock your socks off :-) "
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

The only person for luxury cruises!
Reviewed By Melissa - Boca Raton, FL | Traveled to Alaska ~ USA
I love luxury cruises, and before I started planning with Michael, my husband and I didn’t feel comfortable doing excursions not offered by the cruise line. But on many occasions, Michael would organize private experiences for us that brought us to places we never would have experienced through the normal excursions. It has changed the way we see the world. When he plans a cruise for us, he also plans wonderful experiences when we are in port. It makes our cruise 100% better every time. When we get back on our ship and speak with others, they are always fascinated by the things we did, and wonder how we knew to do it. That is when I simply give them Michael’s email.
Michael, Maggie & Rich - Culture Discovery responded
"Thank you so much. It is my passion to help you get past the typical "tours" people do when they travel, and help you with unique and special experiences with the locals."
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

Nobody else compares
Reviewed By Janet - Austin, TX | Traveled to Caribbean
I've now had Michael plan three trips for me, one of which was two back to back cruises, and previously vacations run by his own company, Culture Discovery in Italy. In all the time I have known him, it is clear that he deeply cares about my experiences, and will goes way out of his way to make sure every part of my trip is better than I can ever expect. He has talked me out of trips that he would make much more money on because he just cares that my vacation is right for me. What can be better than that?
Michael, Maggie & Rich - Culture Discovery responded
"Thank you so much! And now I can't wait for next year when you will be on the transatlantic cruise group, then the Italy tour! Excited to be with you on that one :-) "
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

Friendly, Knowledgable, and thinks of MY needs!
Reviewed By Brenda - New York, NY | Traveled to Italy ~ Europe
I met Michael after booking one of his company's tours through another travel agent. My agent booked his tour, as well as other travel for me in Italy. When Michael saw my arrival information, he saw major problems in my itinerary, and contacted my agent to help her correct mistakes. My agent was unresponsive, so he contacted me. My agent had rain travel within Italy for me that was going to cause me to spend dozens of unnecessary hours on trains, making near impossible connections. He completely reworked my itinerary for me (at no charge) in order to save me lots of time, connections and money. Since I was working with an agent, he told me to give the agent this info so SHE could book it for me. When I finally contacted her, she became very defensive, but I did some searching on my own and could tell that Michael was right. She booked the revised itinerary for me, but ever since I have had Michael handle ALL of my travel plans, and he has been wonderful. Now I tell everyone!
Michael, Maggie & Rich - Culture Discovery responded
"First, thank you so much for the review :-). To be fair, I want to defend your original agent a bit, because it really is a hard job. I have thousands of people per year traveling there, so I know the ins and outs of the train system like the back of my hand. The web info is very confusing, so almost anyone would have gotten that wrong. I help other agents very often because I know Europe so well. Similarly, other agents help me in other areas of the world in which they are more proficient. "
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

Disconnecting on a Transatlantic Cruise

Whenever I get to my destination, I need to hit the ground running, and let's just say that Jet Lag is not my friend. Finally with kids grown up, my wife and I decided we wanted to try to do the transatlantic. I m...

High Expectations Exceeded! AGAIN
Having read all of the marketing materials, and after speaking with Michael, we had high expectations for our cruise plus Tuscany tour. Those expectations were far exceeded!!! Our accommodations were lovely, cruise and hotel staff very attentive and professional. Amazing custom shore excursions, and the schedule, including cooking classes, was brilliantly organized. While other tourists were visiting "tourist" destinations, we were cooking or out in the countryside at vineyards or the goat farm. We visited the busier tourist locations in the late afternoon, when the crowds were leaving town. To us, this appeared to have been really well thought through and orchestrated for our benefit as a mixture between a cruise and culinary tour. It was truly a fabulous trip, thanks to Michael and his team at Culture Discovery.

This trip ranks as our #1 Italian experiene!!!
My group and personal assessment is a resounding 14 thumbs up! I thoroughly enjoyed my journey and the entire experience. Your entire team displays a wonderful and friendly spirit which engages every participant in such a welcoming and warm environment that all feel a family type friendship that will never diminish. We were blessed with our Multi-talented hostess with the mostest lovely Linda and our absolutely Best Driver on the planet Sergio. Theses two stars turned our transportation into pleasure trips. Lynda’s warmth and genuine sense of humor kept our energy soaring and our laughter roaring. My wife and I have been to Italy on four separate occasions ( She has been 5 times). This trip ranks as our number one Italian experience. The towns and venues we visited which all were more intimate and personable than our past visits. This similarity in their respective intimate identities made the interactions more informative and warm.

Best vacation ever!
This was the most amazing vacation! Michael & Culture Discovery Vacations planned everything out perfectly! From wine tasting with horses, private wine tastings and dinners to tours of cities. The accommodations were great and the cooking classes were wonderful! Our guide Mimo was terrific! He kept us 11 women on schedule which is hard to do! lol Our drivers Katusha and Mauritzio (I know I did not spell those right!) were also great!

Maybe the best trip EVER
I cannot express myself in a way that would tell you how amazing this trip turned out to be. We felt so loved and so welcomed. I knew I would like this trip but I was not aware of how much I would LOVE it. I am in awe of these sweet and generous people who were so eager to share their world with us. Please take this trip with CDV. You will enjoy every moment.
