The Iconic Christmas markets in Germany are found in all of the major cities as well as in small villages. In the larger cities, festive stalls are set up in several areas, accessible by walking and if in another part of a city by tram or bus. The markets take place after the middle of November up until just before Christmas eve. Some cities open the Christmas markets for an additional week for the New Year's celebration. Smaller towns often have craftsman who are highly skilled with woodwork. These markets are generally open with more limited schedules.
If you go, fly into a centrally located airport such as Frankfurt or Munich. From there it is convenient to travel by rail in the wintertime. However, I do rent a car with from locations that are not as accessible such as in small villages. It is generally quite easy to take public transportation. Nearly everyone speaks English, although it does help to know some of the local language in a small village where there may not be as many visitors. If you take a Christmas Cruise, the cruise line will pick you up at the airport and go directly to the boat. Otherwise, if you stay in a hotel the night before that can be arranged as well. I have done both and it is often times better to spend the night before due to air delays and jet lag.
