Mexico is one of my favorite destinations to plan because it is not just one kind of vacation. That is exactly why choosing the right area - and the right resort - matters so much.

Yes, Mexico has beautiful beaches, tacos, tequila, sunshine, and plenty of excellent all-inclusive resorts. But it also has history, culture, incredible food, cenotes, Mayan ruins, whale sharks, deep-sea fishing, charming towns, lively cities, quiet beaches, and resort areas that all feel very different from one another.

Cancun, Costa Mujeres, Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, Bucerias, Mazatlán, Los Cabos, Huatulco, and Ixtapa are not interchangeable. The right fit depends on what kind of trip you want - relaxing, romantic, family-friendly, adults-only, adventure-filled, easygoing, upscale, or a little bit of everything.

I travel to Mexico regularly and make a point of touring resorts, walking the beaches, checking out the pools, seeing the rooms, and getting a feel for the overall vibe. I want to know what a resort is really like, not just what the brochure says.
