About Me

The penguins of Betty's Bay in South Africa
The penguins of Betty's Bay in South Africa

Expedition travel is a different kind of trip. The destinations are remote, the experiences are genuinely rare, and the planning matters more than it does almost anywhere else.

I specialize in South Africa, the Galápagos, Norway, Antarctica, and South America. These are places that take real expertise to do well. Not because they're difficult to enjoy once you're there, but because the gap between a mediocre expedition and a remarkable one is almost entirely in the preparation. The ship you're on, the guides who lead your excursions, the operator who puts it together — these things shape everything.

Take Antarctica. There are a lot of trips marketed as "Antarctic expeditions" that, in practice, barely touch the continent. Some sail through the Drake Passage and offer a glimpse of the peninsula from the deck. Others actually get you on the ground with expert naturalists, into the ice, surrounded by wildlife that has no fear of humans because it has never learned to. That's the version worth taking. I know the difference, and I help my clients find it.

For the Galápagos, people are often surprised by how demanding the trip actually is. Getting there takes real effort — there's meaningful travel time just to reach the islands, and once you're there the days are full. Zodiac landings, hikes, snorkeling, wildlife encounters packed into every afternoon. It's extraordinary, but it's not a beach vacation. I tell clients honestly: this one might need a recovery trip afterward. What I can do is match the right itinerary to the right traveler, and find the ship and experience level that fits what you're actually looking for.

South Africa is a destination I feel strongly about and want more people to know. I've been there myself, and it genuinely surprised me. It's one of the most layered, beautiful, and accessible safari destinations in the world — easier to get to than East Africa, with exceptional wildlife, and a food and wine scene that nobody talks about enough. I work with a specialist operator I trust completely, and I want to help more clients get there. I understand the safety concerns, and I'm happy to have that conversation honestly. The experience, with the right planning and the right operator, is safe, extraordinary, and hard to describe until you've seen it.

I approach every expedition with the same philosophy I bring to everything else: I ask a lot of questions, I get the details right, and I handle all of it so that you can just show up and be fully present for what you came to experience. These are the trips that change how you see the world. I want to help make them possible.

Unforgettable Experiences in Scotland
Reviewed By Jason L. - Oakland, CA | Traveled to Scotland ~ Europe
We were unsure what to expect when seeking a travel agent for our trip. We had a basic idea of things we wanted to do and see in Scotland, but it was very basic. Ultimately, using a travel agent helped us put together an itinerary that we would never have been able to do on our own. Finding spots between and around our original basic itinerary was extremely helpful. We experienced so much more of Scotland because of it. Further, helping to nail down the best places to stay and see in those locations was an immensely helpful thing the travel agent did. The activities that stood out the most were our daytrip to the isle of Skye, as well as our travels to Islay for various whisky tastings. Those are experiences we won't forget, and whenever we make it back to Scotland, we'll definitely be spending more time in both those areas.
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

Alaska cruise
Reviewed By Mike - Portland, OR | Traveled to Alaska ~ USA
Rachel suggested a cruise that fit our schedule and helped us navigate all the various offers and options for the cruise itself. She also showed us where to park for the week and suggested shore excursions that our family would enjoy together.
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

Amazing Galapagos cruise!
Reviewed By Jaclyn M. - Portland, OR | Traveled to Galapagos Islands ~ Ecuador ~ South America
Rachel is awesome! We loved our accommodations! Samari Spa resort was incredible; the Galapagos cruise was amazing; we really enjoyed our final night at ILLA Experience Hotel and wish we had more time to spend there. We emailed about this while on the trip, but wanted to put here as well: everywhere we stayed (except the final night - thank you for fixing, Rachel!) we had two twin beds. We're a legally married couple, and while I understand difficulties with same sex couples in other countries and by no means is your fault, it was a bit disappointing to show up and always have two beds. Overall the trip was fantastic. Just what we were hoping for!
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.
