Museums, Museums and More Monuments
Honestly going to DC is a multi trip experience. Just traveling along National Mall there is so much to do and see that it is next to impossible to do it all in a day, much less even a week. While some museums along the National Mall do cost money, 99% of them are completely free. Here are a few highlights if you just have the day.
HIGHLIGHTS:
US Capitol Tour
Washington Monumnet
Ford's Theater
National Mall Monuments
White House Visitors Center
Lincoln Memorial
Air & Space Museum

A Somber Day but worth the Visit
While it is a very somber experience, visiting Arlington is a must not miss on any trip to DC, it also offers some of the most spectacular views of such an amazing city. After visiting Arlington there are also other must see places close by.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Arlington National Cemetary
9-11 Memorial
Pentagon
Lady Bird Johnson Park

Frequently Missed but worth a Visit
In frequent conversations with those that have visited DC there are two places that are frequently missed but once experienced, everyone agrees they are a must see. Mount Vernon is the historic home of America's first president, George Washington Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center displays thousands of aviation and space artifacts, including the Space Shuttle Discovery, a Blackbird SR-71, and a Concorde, in two large hangars. Personally is way better than the Air & Space Museum located along the National Mall.
