Rocky Mountaineer’s First Passage to the West gave me a new appreciation for the pleasure of slow travel. I experienced the journey in Gold Leaf Service, where panoramic views, attentive hosts, and beautifully presented meals turn the journey itself into a highlight.
Leaving Vancouver, the scenery gradually shifted from green coastal landscapes toward river canyons and the drier interior of British Columbia. The journey through the Fraser and Thompson river regions was captivating, particularly as the train traveled through areas with dramatic engineering and historic railway significance.
After an overnight stay in Kamloops, the second day brought us closer to the remarkable mountains of the Canadian Rockies. One of the things I appreciated most was being able to watch the landscape change without needing to drive or concentrate on navigation.
Our larger journey also included Banff, Lake Louise, and Calgary. In Banff, I experienced the gondola, mountain views, and Upper Hot Springs. Those visits were land portions of the itinerary rather than attractions accessed directly from the train.
I would recommend combining Rocky Mountaineer with carefully selected hotel stays and time to explore the national parks. The two-day rail experience is exceptional, but the surrounding itinerary helps make the overall vacation unforgettable.
