After sailing aboard EXPLORA III through the Norwegian fjords, I discovered a style of luxury ocean travel that genuinely exceeded my expectations.
From the moment I stepped onboard, it felt less like a traditional cruise ship and more like arriving at a beautiful luxury resort. EXPLORA III was bright, spacious, sophisticated and modern, with beautiful spaces that continually connected you back to the ocean.
What surprised me most was how effortless everything felt. One of the greatest luxuries aboard EXPLORA III was something incredibly simple: there were no crowds. I never felt as though I was waiting in line, searching for somewhere to sit or navigating packed public spaces.
The service was equally impressive. Crew members quickly remembered my preferences, requests and even my name. I could simply be walking down the hall and hear, “Hello, Austin.” Those small interactions made the experience feel genuinely personal.
The food aboard EXPLORA III was some of the best I have experienced at sea. My favorite dining experience was Marble & Co. Grill. Before becoming a travel advisor, I worked at a high-end steakhouse and wine destination, so this is an area where I tend to notice the details.
Marble & Co. impressed me from beginning to end. The steaks, sauces and accompaniments were exceptional, and one of my favorite dishes was the crushed fingerling potatoes topped with caviar. They were beautiful, but more importantly, they were absolutely delicious.
For me, it was one of the finest steakhouse experiences I have had on land or at sea. Even In-Suite Dining felt elevated, with selections such as Wagyu sliders, lobster macaroni and cheese, smoothies and cold-pressed juices.
Explora Journeys is an all-suite experience, and even the entry-level Ocean Suites feel wonderfully residential. My suite offered a generous living area, king-size bed, beautiful bathroom and private terrace. Waiting in the suite was welcome Champagne, along with wine and a spirit selected according to preference.
There was even a pillow selection to personalize the bedding. Naturally, I chose down everything.Ocean Wellness aboard EXPLORA III was the most impressive wellness area I have personally experienced at sea. The thermal area includes experiences such as a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, salt cave, experience showers and relaxing indoor and outdoor spaces.
One of my favorite memories was spending the morning relaxing in Ocean Wellness before stepping ashore in Flåm to experience the famous Flåm Railway. Beginning the day completely refreshed and then traveling through the Norwegian fjords was extraordinary.
I love Alaska, but personally, I found sailing through the Norwegian fjords even more beautiful. After experiencing Explora Journeys in Norway, I would love to experience the brand in Alaska as well.
Another reason I believe Explora Journeys offers tremendous value is how much of the onboard experience is already included. Dining experiences, In-Suite Dining, fine wines, Champagne, premium spirits, specialty coffees and teas, Wi-Fi, onboard gratuities and access to the Ocean Wellness thermal area are among the inclusions.
There are still optional experiences available at an additional cost, including shore excursions and spa treatments, but I appreciated not constantly thinking about packages or additional onboard expenses.
I would recommend Explora Journeys to travelers who appreciate beautiful resorts, excellent restaurants, wellness, attentive service and sophisticated surroundings. It is especially appealing to someone who loves the ease of cruising but does not necessarily want the atmosphere of a traditional large cruise ship.
The onboard style is sophisticated but relaxed. I enjoyed wearing a suit to dinner on several evenings, but the experience never felt rigidly formal.
If your ideal cruise involves water slides, nonstop activities and a high-energy party atmosphere, Explora Journeys offers something very different. And that is exactly what makes it special.
For me, the greatest luxury was how effortless everything felt. There was no rushing. There were no crowds. There was simply space to dine, explore, relax and enjoy being exactly where I was.
