European Christmas Markets Are One of My Favorite Ways to Experience Europe 

I love Europe any time of year, but there is something completely different about being there during Christmas market season. 

I’ve spent weeks traveling through Europe visiting Christmas markets, traveling between cities by train, trying the food, exploring historic centers and seeing how different each destination feels during the holidays. It’s also one of the trips my husband and I genuinely enjoy doing together.

That firsthand experience helps me plan beyond simply picking a city with a market.

River Cruise or Land Trip? 

There are several great ways to experience Europe’s Christmas markets.

A river cruise lets you unpack once and visit several cities along the same route. A land-based trip gives you more flexibility to combine larger cities with smaller towns and destinations that aren’t directly on the rivers. 

Neither is automatically better. I help compare the pace, itinerary, market locations and logistics so you can choose the style that fits you.

Choosing the Right Markets

Germany and Austria are probably the first places many travelers think of, but Christmas markets are found throughout Europe.

Italy, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and other destinations can all work well depending on the experience you want. 

Some travelers want the large, famous markets. Others prefer smaller towns, historic settings, food and wine, or a mix of several different styles.

Timing Matters

Christmas market dates vary by city and year.

I check the actual market schedules against the itinerary instead of assuming every market will be open for your travel dates. I also look at hotel locations, train schedules, cruise routes and how much time you’ll realistically have in each destination. 

Winter weather and shorter daylight hours are part of the experience too, so I help make sure the itinerary is comfortable and realistic.

Make It More Than Just the Markets

A great Christmas market trip can also include historic sites, castles, museums, food experiences, scenic train travel and extra nights before or after a river cruise.
