About Me

When people think of iconic wine destinations, the first names that come up are usually Bordeaux, Tuscany, or Rioja. Australia doesn’t always get the credit it deserves and honestly, as a travel advisor who’s spent time on the ground in wine country around the world, I think that’s one of the best-kept secrets in travel right now.

Australia has more than 65 distinct wine regions, ranging from the sweeping valley floors of South Australia to cool-climate coastal ridges in Victoria and Western Australia. But not all regions are created equal when it comes to an immersive, high-end travel experience. These are the ones I recommend to ABM clients who want to go beyond a bottle and truly live in the wine.

Margaret River, Western Australia — The World Is Paying Attention

Located in one of the most remote fine wine regions on Earth, Margaret River accounts for just two percent of Australia’s annual wine production, which tells you everything about how intensely focused the winemakers here are. This is not a volume game. The cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay produced here are exceptional, with many winemakers championing natural fermentation, organic, and biodynamic practices. From a travel standpoint, Margaret River is also simply stunning. The region sits between the Indian Ocean and karri forests in Western Australia’s southwest corner, about three hours south of Perth.

Barossa Valley, South Australia — Ancient Vines, Iconic Bottles

The Barossa Valley is Australia’s most iconic wine region, famous for its big, bold reds, with grand wine estates dotting the valley floor and giving the region a distinctly European atmosphere set against a uniquely Australian landscape.

What sets the Barossa apart for discerning travelers isn’t just the wine, it’s the age of the vines. The Barossa is home to some of the oldest Shiraz vines on the planet, many of them ungrafted and more than 150 years old. Tasting a wine made from those vines isn’t just a sensory experience; it’s a connection to history that you can put in a glass.

McLaren Vale, South Australia — Grenache Country with Coastal Soul

Just 45 minutes south of Adelaide, McLaren Vale is the Barossa’s more relaxed, sun-drenched sibling. Where the Barossa leans into power, McLaren Vale plays a different card: Grenache, Shiraz blends, and a coastal Mediterranean influence that gives its wines a freshness and elegance that surprises first-time visitors.

Yarra Valley, Victoria — Cool-Climate Elegance Near Melbourne

For travelers who prefer elegance over power, Pinot Noir over Shiraz, and a quick escape from a world-class city, the Yarra Valley is the answer. Located just over an hour from Melbourne, this cool-climate region produces some of the finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Southern Hemisphere.

Mornington Peninsula, Victoria — Where Wine Meets the Sea

Just over an hour from Melbourne, Mornington Peninsula is where cool-climate wines meet coastal luxury, known for refined Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the region blends laid-back charm with gourmet indulgence.

How to Do Australia Wine Country Right

One thing I’ve learned from years of building bespoke itineraries is that wine regions reward slowness. The mistake most travelers make is trying to see too many regions in too little time. My recommendation: choose two, maybe three regions and go deep. Stay on-estate where possible. Book private tastings over walk-in visits. Eat at the winery restaurants, because some of the best meals in Australia are being served in the middle of a vineyard.

Australia’s wine regions also combine beautifully with the country’s other extraordinary experiences; the Great Barrier Reef, the Outback, Sydney Harbour. A well-constructed Australia itinerary can genuinely do it all, but only if it’s been thoughtfully designed rather than cobbled together.

That’s where I come in. At Adventures by Matt, I only recommend destinations I’ve personally explored, and Australia’s wine country is very much on my radar for clients who want something sophisticated, immersive, and decidedly off the beaten tourist path. If an Australian wine journey sounds like your kind of adventure, I’d love to start building it with you.

Best Company Trip I’ve Ever Been On
Reviewed By Ana C - Reno, NV | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
From the moment we landed in Vegas, everything felt effortless. Flights, transfers, and hotel check-in were smooth, and it was clear this trip was extremely well planned. The private dinner at Bourbon Steak was next-level — incredible food, amazing service, and such a special atmosphere for our team. Renting out Swingers Mini Golf for the after-party was such a fun and unexpected touch. Huge credit to Matt for creating an experience that felt both luxurious and genuinely fun. He gave plenty of communication about which flight I was placed on along with a detailed itinerary.
