About Me

I’ve helped hundreds of clients plan their first trip to Southeast Asia, and the conversation almost always starts the same way: “Matt, I know I want to go — I just have no idea where to begin.”

I get it. Southeast Asia is enormous. It spans over a dozen countries, thousands of islands, countless ancient temples, and more culinary traditions than most people encounter in a lifetime. When you’re staring at a blank map and a two-week window of vacation time, the options feel overwhelming rather than exciting.

Whether you’re drawn to the street food scenes of Vietnam, the spiritual landscapes of Cambodia, the island beaches of Thailand, or the slow-moving wonder of a Mekong River cruise, Southeast Asia will deliver. But getting the most out of your first trip means being strategic about where you go, when you go, and how you structure your time.

Why Southeast Asia Should Be on Every Traveler’s Radar

Before we get into the logistics, let’s talk about why Southeast Asia consistently ranks as one of the world’s most compelling travel destinations and why I personally love sending clients there.

The region offers an extraordinary combination of value, diversity, and accessibility that’s genuinely hard to find anywhere else on the planet. A world-class meal costs a few dollars. A beachside bungalow can run a fraction of what you’d pay in the Mediterranean. And yet the experiences, floating markets at dawn, temple complexes that dwarf anything in Europe, rival the best travel moments anywhere.

For first-timers, Southeast Asia also has a well-developed tourism infrastructure in the key destinations. You don’t need to be an expedition traveler to navigate Bangkok, Hanoi, or Siem Reap. But you do benefit enormously from having an experienced hand guiding your itinerary, timing, and logistics.

The Best Starting Points for First-Time Visitors

Not all Southeast Asian destinations are created equal for first-time travelers.

Thailand: The Classic Gateway

A two-week Thailand itinerary typically looks like this: three to four nights in Bangkok, two nights in Chiang Mai, a day or two at Chiang Rai for the White Temple and Golden Triangle, then south to an island for the final stretch. It flows beautifully and gives travelers a genuine taste of Thailand’s range.

Vietnam: The Photographer’s Dream

Vietnam is long, narrow, and absolutely stunning from top to bottom. The challenge for first-timers is that it’s also easy to underestimate how much ground you’re covering. I’ve seen too many clients try to do Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City in ten days and end up exhausted.

For first-timers, I typically recommend a 12-day northern and central itinerary, which captures the iconic Ha Long Bay overnight cruise, one of the most spectacular experiences in all of Asia and the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An.

Cambodia: Ancient Wonders and Emotional Depth

Cambodia often surprises my clients. They come for Angkor Wat — the world’s largest religious monument and they leave having experienced something far more profound than expected.

Pair Siem Reap with a few days in Phnom Penh for context and history, and you have a powerful, moving first Cambodia experience.

The Mekong River Cruise: A Different Way to Experience Southeast Asia

One of the most transformative ways to explore Southeast Asia and one I personally champion for the right traveler, is a Mekong River cruise. This is not your typical cruise experience. It’s slow, immersive, and intimate in a way that no land-based itinerary can replicate.

When to Go: Timing Your First Southeast Asia Trip

Southeast Asia’s climate is complex and varies considerably by region, so timing matters more here than almost anywhere else I send clients. As a general rule, the best window for most of the region is November through February, the dry season, with lower humidity, cooler temperatures, and reliable sunshine. This is peak travel season for good reason.

Ready to Start Planning?

Southeast Asia is waiting, and it’s better than anything you’ve imagined. As your travel advisor, my job is to take the overwhelming and make it exciting, turning a map full of possibilities into a seamless, personalized journey that fits exactly who you are as a traveler.

Whether you’re dreaming of a custom two-week Thailand itinerary, a Mekong River cruise that combines Vietnam and Cambodia, or something more adventurous entirely, I’d love to help you design it.

Best Company Trip I’ve Ever Been On
Reviewed By Ana C - Reno, NV | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
From the moment we landed in Vegas, everything felt effortless. Flights, transfers, and hotel check-in were smooth, and it was clear this trip was extremely well planned. The private dinner at Bourbon Steak was next-level — incredible food, amazing service, and such a special atmosphere for our team. Renting out Swingers Mini Golf for the after-party was such a fun and unexpected touch. Huge credit to Matt for creating an experience that felt both luxurious and genuinely fun. He gave plenty of communication about which flight I was placed on along with a detailed itinerary.
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

Vietnam, Unfiltered: 15 Days Across the Country

Vietnam doesn’t ease you in. It grabs you from the moment you land.I touched down in Hanoi late on a Friday night in May, whisked through arrivals on a VIP fast track and delivered to The Chi Boutique Hotel.
