About Me

There is a moment that happens on the Chobe River that I have tried to describe to clients dozens of times and I'm not sure I have ever done it justice. You are sitting on the upper deck of a small river boat, coffee in hand, as the African sun clears the treeline on the Namibian bank across the water. The river is still. And then, from the shoreline to your left, a herd of African elephants forty of them, perhaps fifty  wades into the shallows. The calves press close to their mothers. The matriarch tests the water, then leads the herd forward. They are fifteen meters from your boat. You can hear them breathing.

The Chobe River forms the boundary between Botswana and Namibia, running through one of Africa's most wildlife-rich ecosystems. Botswana has made a deliberate national commitment to low-volume, high-value conservation tourism meaning fewer visitors, stricter protections, and wildlife encounters of a quality that more heavily trafficked safari destinations simply cannot match.

What Makes the Chobe River Unlike Any Other Safari Experience

The Chobe National Park is home to the largest elephant population on earth an estimated 120,000 to 130,000 African elephants concentrated in a park of approximately 11,700 square kilometers. During the dry season, when waterholes across the broader savanna recede, this enormous population converges on the Chobe River the region's most reliable permanent water source. What this produces, from May through October especially, is a wildlife spectacle of truly astonishing scale.

But here's what separates the Chobe River cruise from every other form of safari: the perspective. On a traditional game drive, you observe wildlife from a land vehicle, you are in their habitat, on their terms, and the experience, while extraordinary, places you among the animals. On the Chobe River, you observe from the water. The animals come to the river's edge to drink, bathe, cross, and play completely on their own schedule, ignoring the slow-moving boats as entirely non-threatening. The result is a level of proximity and behavioral observation that even the best land-based safari rarely achieves.

What sets the Chobe apart from most other African wildlife destinations is not just the density of animals, it is the diversity of ecosystems that the river and its floodplains support. The Chobe floodplain transitions from open grassland to riparian forest to the river channel itself, creating a layered habitat that supports species at every level of the food chain, all within viewing range of a single afternoon on the water.

When to Visit: Timing Your Chobe River Experience

The Chobe River is a year-round destination, but the experience changes significantly across seasons and the best time for your visit depends on what you most want to see and experience.

Dry Season: May through October

This is when the Chobe River cruise delivers its most dramatic wildlife experiences, and the window I recommend most consistently to Adventures by Matt clients. As the dry season progresses and water sources across the broader landscape diminish, wildlife concentrations along the Chobe River intensify dramatically.

Shoulder Season: April and November

The transitional months offer a genuine sweet spot for some travelers, particularly photographers and birders.

Green Season: November through April

Botswana's summer months bring rainfall, lush vegetation, and a different character to the Chobe entirely.

The River at the Heart of Africa's Finest Wildlife Experience

The Chobe River is not on most travelers' radar when they start planning their first African safari, and that is exactly what makes it so extraordinary for those who discover it. While the great game parks of East Africa handle hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, the Chobe receives a fraction of that traffic, protected by Botswana's deliberate commitment to conservation over mass tourism.

What you receive in exchange for that commitment is an Africa that feels authentic, unmanaged, and genuinely wild. The elephants that wade into the shallows beside your boat are not performing. The hippos that surface next to your vessel are not aware of your schedule. The fish eagle calling from the dead tree on the Namibian bank has no idea it's picturesque. This is Africa operating entirely on its own terms, and you are fortunate enough to be watching from the water.

Ready to plan your Botswana river safari? Contact Adventures by Matt today for a personalized consultation. Africa is one of my deepest specialties, and I'll design an itinerary that combines the Chobe River, the Okavango Delta, and Victoria Falls into the African journey you've always imagined.

Best Company Trip I’ve Ever Been On
Reviewed By Ana C - Reno, NV | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
From the moment we landed in Vegas, everything felt effortless. Flights, transfers, and hotel check-in were smooth, and it was clear this trip was extremely well planned. The private dinner at Bourbon Steak was next-level — incredible food, amazing service, and such a special atmosphere for our team. Renting out Swingers Mini Golf for the after-party was such a fun and unexpected touch. Huge credit to Matt for creating an experience that felt both luxurious and genuinely fun. He gave plenty of communication about which flight I was placed on along with a detailed itinerary.
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.
