About Me

I have sailed the Rhine. I have cruised the Danube at sunrise with Vienna glowing on the left bank. I have stood on the sun deck of a Douro river ship watching the vineyard terraces of Portugal rise in terraces above the morning mist. All of it extraordinary. All of it deeply memorable. And then I sailed the Mekong and I understood that river cruising could be something else entirely. The Mekong is not a European river dressed in castles and cobblestones. It is one of the great rivers of the world stretching nearly 3,000 miles from the Tibetan Plateau through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam before emptying into the South China Sea through a vast delta that produces enough rice to feed a continent. The section that river cruise ships navigate from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam's Mekong Delta up through Cambodia to the ancient temple complex of Angkor near Siem Reap is a journey through two of Southeast Asia's most fascinating, historically layered, and visually stunning countries. This is the river cruise I recommend to clients who have already experienced Europe and are ready for something that will genuinely reframe their understanding of what travel can do. The Mekong river cruise from Vietnam to Cambodia is the most culturally transformative journey I have ever taken by water. It is not a relaxing cruise in the European sense it is a profound, immersive encounter with two civilizations that will stay with you long after the river has receded from view.

Why the Mekong Is Unlike Any River Cruise in Europe

The first thing clients ask when I suggest the Mekong is how it compares to their European river cruise experience. The honest answer is that it doesn't compare, it complements.

On a European river cruise, the setting is the star. The medieval villages, the Gothic cathedrals, the vineyard-draped hillsides, these are the landscapes that centuries of civilization and careful preservation have made so visually spectacular. The history is present but comfortable, accessible, and largely celebratory.

On the Mekong, the people are the star. The river is the lifeblood of two nations not a scenic backdrop but an active, working waterway where families fish, markets float, monks collect morning alms from sampans, and children wave from bamboo-stilted riverbanks. The history here is both ancient and recent, encompassing the grandeur of the Khmer Empire and the devastating weight of the 20th century's most traumatic chapters.

Angkor Wat: The Journey's Crown Jewel

Every Mekong river cruise builds toward a single, defining destination and Angkor Wat delivers on every expectation and then some. Built in the first half of the 12th century by the Khmer king Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument on earth, covering more than 400 acres and containing more carved stone relief than any other structure in the world.

Approaching it at sunrise, when the towers emerge as silhouettes above the reflection pool as the sky shifts from violet to gold, is genuinely one of the most moving experiences available to any traveler.

Most Mekong river cruise itineraries include two full days at the Angkor complex and experienced travelers will tell you that two days is both deeply rewarding and not quite enough. Pre- and post-cruise extensions in Siem Reap are worth serious consideration for anyone who wants to explore the complex at a more contemplative pace.

Phnom Penh: Beauty, Resilience, and History That Cannot Be Ignored

Cambodia's capital is a city of extraordinary contrasts, the gilded spires of the Royal Palace rising above the Tonle Sap River, the bustling Central Market where everything from fresh produce to silk scarves fills a cavernous art deco hall, and the quiet, devastating weight of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields memorial just outside the city.

When Is the Best Time for a Mekong River Cruise?

The Mekong operates on a fundamentally different seasonal calendar than European rivers, and understanding it is essential for planning the right trip.

November through February — The Sweet Spot

March and April — Hot and Increasingly Busy

May through October — Monsoon Season

The River That Changes How You See the World

I am careful not to oversell destinations, it sets up expectations that reality then has to meet, and sometimes that meeting is uncomfortable. The Mekong is the exception to my caution. I have never had a client return from this journey and tell me it didn't live up to what I described. Most of them tell me it exceeded it.This is a river that carries the weight of two ancient civilizations, the memory of profound tragedy, the daily life of tens of millions of people, and some of the most spectacular architecture human beings have ever created. Sailing it slowly, stopping at the villages and the markets and the temples, eating the food and watching the monks and letting the scale of Angkor simply wash over you, there is nothing quite like it in the world of river cruising.

Reviewed By Ana C - Reno, NV | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
From the moment we landed in Vegas, everything felt effortless. Flights, transfers, and hotel check-in were smooth, and it was clear this trip was extremely well planned. The private dinner at Bourbon Steak was next-level — incredible food, amazing service, and such a special atmosphere for our team. Renting out Swingers Mini Golf for the after-party was such a fun and unexpected touch. Huge credit to Matt for creating an experience that felt both luxurious and genuinely fun. He gave plenty of communication about which flight I was placed on along with a detailed itinerary.

Awesome taste of Italy
Reviewed By BV - Pheonix, AZ | Traveled to Italy | Europe
We can’t thank Matt enough for helping make our post-cruise trip to Italy so special. There were six of us traveling together, and he coordinated everything flawlessly—from our car service after the cruise, to train tickets, hotels, and unique experiences like a Vespa tour and a golf cart tour through Rome. The hotels in Rome and Tuscany were beautiful, and every part of the trip ran smoothly thanks to his planning. I have used Matt before and recommend him to my group of friends. We’ll absolutely be using Matt again for future friend trips and recommend him wholeheartedly!
