About Me

The number one question I get from clients who are curious about river cruising but haven't pulled the trigger yet is some version of this: 'Matt, is it expensive? What am I really going to spend?' It's a completely fair question. And the honest answer is: it depends, but it's almost certainly a better value than you think. River cruising sits in a fascinating middle ground in the travel marketplace. On the surface, the base fares can look intimidating. But when you start accounting for everything that's included: the meals, the wine, the excursions, the accommodations, and the service the true cost per day often rivals a mid-range European hotel where you'd be paying separately for every experience. In this post, I'm going to walk you through every layer of river cruise pricing, from the base fare to the easy-to-miss extras, so you can plan your budget with confidence and zero surprises.

The Base Fare: What Are We Actually Talking About?

A typical 7-night European river cruise starts at around $2,500 to $3,500 per person for an entry-level cabin on a mainstream cruise line, and climbs to $6,000, $10,000, or well beyond for luxury suites on premium lines.

What's Included in the Base Fare?

This is the part of the river cruise conversation that almost always changes how clients think about the cost. A well-chosen river cruise isn't just a floating hotel room. Depending on the cruise line, your base fare typically covers:

  • All onboard meals: breakfast, lunch, and a multi-course dinner every day
  • Beer, wine, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner (premium lines extend this to all-day, all-inclusive)
  • Guided shore excursions in each port, usually at least one included per stop
  • Onboard entertainment, cultural lectures, and destination programming
  • Port taxes, fees, and government charges
  • Onboard Wi-Fi throughout the cruise
  • Crew gratuities (on most premium and luxury lines)

Now compare that to a self-guided European trip where you're booking hotels in each city, paying for every restaurant meal, purchasing museum and attraction tickets, hiring guides, and tipping everyone along the way. The all-in nature of river cruising compresses a lot of those costs into one predictable number and that predictability is genuinely one of its greatest advantages for travelers who want to know exactly what they're spending.

Does the River or Destination Affect the Price?

Yes! European rivers are the most competitively priced because the market is mature, the infrastructure is established, and there are dozens of cruise lines competing for the same itineraries. As you move further afield, prices generally increase.

  • European rivers (Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, Rhone) — Most competitive pricing, widest choice of cruise lines and departure dates
  • Mekong River (Vietnam and Cambodia) — Moderately higher pricing due to smaller ship sizes and fewer competing operators; typically $4,000 to $8,000 per person for 7 nights
  • Nile River (Egypt) — Wide pricing range from budget to luxury; expect $2,500 to $10,000+ per person depending on the ship category
  • Amazon River (Brazil) — Expedition-style cruising with specialist operators; budget $5,000 to $15,000 per person for a 7 to 10 night journey
  • Chobe River (Botswana) — Typically part of a broader African safari package; river cruise components range from $6,000 to $15,000 per person

When to Book and How to Save

Consider Shoulder Season Sailings:

March, April, October, and November offer some of the best value in river cruising. You'll encounter fewer crowds, more attentive service, and prices that are noticeably lower than the peak summer months, while still experiencing beautiful destinations and excellent weather. March sailings in particular are a personal favorite of mine and the focus of our River Awakening theme this month.

Book Early for the Best Selection:

The best cabins on the most desirable departures particularly Christmas market cruises and peak summer sailings sell out 12 to 18 months in advance. Early booking promotions often include shipboard credits, complimentary beverage packages, or reduced single supplements.

Work with a Travel Advisor:

This is not a self-serving point, it's a practical one. Travel advisors like me have access to negotiated group rates, exclusive amenity packages, and promotional offers that are not available directly through cruise line websites or third-party booking platforms.

The Bottom Line

River cruising is not cheap but it is one of the most genuinely value-packed travel experiences available to today's traveler. When you understand what's included in the fare, budget realistically for the extras, and time your booking strategically, the cost becomes far less intimidating and far more justifiable.

Best Company Trip I’ve Ever Been On
Reviewed By Ana C - Reno, NV | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
From the moment we landed in Vegas, everything felt effortless. Flights, transfers, and hotel check-in were smooth, and it was clear this trip was extremely well planned. The private dinner at Bourbon Steak was next-level — incredible food, amazing service, and such a special atmosphere for our team. Renting out Swingers Mini Golf for the after-party was such a fun and unexpected touch. Huge credit to Matt for creating an experience that felt both luxurious and genuinely fun. He gave plenty of communication about which flight I was placed on along with a detailed itinerary.

He coordinated all flights, hotel accommodations, and airport transfers seamlessly, making the entire process effortless for our team. Awesome taste of Italy
Reviewed By BV - Pheonix, AZ | Traveled to Italy | Europe
We can’t thank Matt enough for helping make our post-cruise trip to Italy so special. There were six of us traveling together, and he coordinated everything flawlessly—from our car service after the cruise, to train tickets, hotels, and unique experiences like a Vespa tour and a golf cart tour through Rome. The hotels in Rome and Tuscany were beautiful, and every part of the trip ran smoothly thanks to his planning. I have used Matt before and recommend him to my group of friends. We’ll absolutely be using Matt again for future friend trips and recommend him wholeheartedly!
