About Me

I've been planning river cruises for clients for a long time, and I can tell you this with absolute certainty: the moment a first-timer steps onto a river cruise ship and watches a centuries-old castle glide past their cabin window, something shifts. It's usually followed by one of two reactions, pure awe, or the quiet realization that they should have done this ten years ago.River cruising is one of the fastest-growing segments in travel, and for good reason. It combines the convenience of unpacking once with the richness of exploring multiple destinations, the intimacy of a boutique hotel with the ease of all-inclusive pricing, and the romance of travel by water with the practicality of docking right in the heart of each city.

But for first-timers, the sheer number of options: cruise lines, rivers, itineraries, cabin categories, and departure dates ;can feel overwhelming before you've even started. That's exactly why I wrote this guide. Think of it as sitting down with me over coffee and asking every question you've been too embarrassed to Google. River cruising is not just a trip, it's a way of seeing the world at the pace it was meant to be experienced.

What Exactly Is a River Cruise?

Let's start at the very beginning. A river cruise is a vacation aboard a small ship, typically carrying between 100 and 190 passengers, that sails along inland waterways rather than open ocean. You sleep in a comfortable stateroom, enjoy onboard dining and entertainment, and wake up each morning in a completely new destination without ever having to repack your bags.

Most European river cruise ships have two to three passenger decks, a sun deck on top, a restaurant, a lounge bar, and increasingly, wellness facilities like a spa and a small fitness room. The ships are elegant without being ostentatious, and the atmosphere is relaxed, social, and deeply immersive in a way that large ships rarely achieve.

What's Included in a River Cruise?

This is where river cruising genuinely surprises people. The all-inclusive nature of most river cruise packages represents exceptional value when you break it down. Here is what is typically included in your cruise fare:

All meals onboard — breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily

Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages with lunch and dinner

Complimentary guided excursions in most ports of call

Onboard Wi-Fi (speeds vary by ship and location on the river)

Port charges and government taxes

Evening entertainment, cultural lectures, and destination programming

What's typically not included? Pre- and post-cruise hotel nights, international airfare, premium shore excursions beyond the included options, spa treatments, and specialty cocktails or premium wines. Some cruise lines, particularly the luxury tier including Scenic, Tauck, and Riverside Luxury Cruises offer genuinely all-inclusive packages that cover virtually everything, including premium beverages throughout the day and all excursions.

Which River Should You Sail First?

Europe is the undisputed heartland of river cruising, and for first-timers, it's almost always where I recommend starting. The infrastructure is exceptional, the destinations are extraordinary, and the cruise lines have refined these itineraries over decades. Here's a quick orientation to the major rivers:

The Danube:

The classic first-timer's river. Flowing through Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, and Passau, the Danube delivers some of the most iconic European scenery imaginable. It's the perfect introduction to river cruising, reliable, spectacular, and endlessly rewarding.

The Rhine:

Picture vine-draped hillsides, medieval castles perched above every bend, and charming German and Dutch towns. The Rhine is one of the most visually dramatic rivers in Europe and pairs beautifully with the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn.

The Douro (Portugal):

For wine lovers and those seeking something slightly off the beaten European path, the Douro Valley in Portugal is breathtaking. Terraced vineyards climb the hillsides above the river, and the port wine tastings are a highlight of every sailing.

The right river for you depends entirely on your interests, travel history, and how adventurous you want to be for your first sailing. Let's talk, that conversation is exactly what I'm here for.

Your River Journey Starts Here:

River cruising changed the way I think about travel, and after years of booking these journeys for clients, I've watched it do the same for many travelers who thought they already knew what a great vacation felt like. There's something about waking up on the water, surrounded by history and beauty, that simply resets your relationship with the world.

Let's start planning your river awakening. Reach out to Adventures by Matt today for a personalized, no-pressure river cruise consultation. Together, we'll design a journey you'll be talking about for the rest of your life.

Best Company Trip I’ve Ever Been On
Reviewed By Ana C - Reno, NV | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
From the moment we landed in Vegas, everything felt effortless. Flights, transfers, and hotel check-in were smooth, and it was clear this trip was extremely well planned. The private dinner at Bourbon Steak was next-level — incredible food, amazing service, and such a special atmosphere for our team. Renting out Swingers Mini Golf for the after-party was such a fun and unexpected touch. Huge credit to Matt for creating an experience that felt both luxurious and genuinely fun. He gave plenty of communication about which flight I was placed on along with a detailed itinerary.
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.
