Looking to plan a trip to California but have no clue where to begin? We get it; we've been there. California is huge and a bit intimidating for first-time visitors. Where do you even start?

From tons of national parks to choose from and famous cities to explore, your to-do list in never-ending in California. There are different climates everywhere, weather patterns are always changing, and the landscapes are as diverse as the country itself.

This guide will show you the ropes and break down everything you need to know about visiting California. We’ll discuss tips on when to visit and getting around, the best cities and national parks, things to do, and even more tips to make your journey more memorable. Grab your sunnies, and let’s begin!

Best Time of Year to Visit California

The best time to visit California largely depends on what you want to experience. Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the best times for pleasant weather and low crowds. You can enjoy blooming flowers, good temperatures, and fall foliage.

Summer is perfect for beach trips and outdoor activities, especially along the coast, but expect larger crowds and higher prices. Winter is great for skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountains and desert regions like Death Valley.

Cities to Visit in California

California is home to some of the most iconic and well-known cities in the country. It’s no surprise the state attracts so many visitors with everything it has. However, each city has its distinct characteristics and features you want to be sure to enjoy while visiting, such as:

  • Los Angeles: Known as the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles boasts iconic landmarks like Hollywood Boulevard, Griffith Observatory, and Venice Beach.
  • San Diego: Boasting beautiful beaches, a world-class zoo, and the lively Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego offers a blend of activities and laid-back Southern California vibes.
  • Santa Barbara: Between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara is famous for its Spanish colonial architecture, beaches, and upscale dining.
  • San Francisco: A city of hills and fog, San Francisco attracts visitors with its iconic Golden Gate Bridge, neighborhoods like Chinatown and Haight-Ashbury, and lively arts and culinary scene. This city has 100% the best food in the state!
  • Sacramento: California's capital city, Sacramento, is steeped in history and has attractions such as the State Capitol Museum, Old Sacramento Waterfront, and Riverfront Park.
  • Santa Monica: Known for its pier, beaches, and Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica offers a mix of outdoor recreation, shopping, dining, and entertainment options in SoCal.

National Parks in California

One of the best parts about California is its large selection of national parks and seashores, each one as unique as the next. From towering sequoias to deserts and coastlines, these parks are a massive highlight of traveling to California. Check out your options:

  • Yosemite National Park: In the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite is renowned for its granite cliffs, waterfalls like Yosemite Falls, and giant sequoias in Mariposa Grove.
  • Joshua Tree National Park: Located where the Mojave and Colorado deserts converge, Joshua Tree is famous for its Joshua trees, rock formations perfect for climbing, and desert sunsets.
  • Sequoia National Park: Home to some of the world's largest trees, Sequoia National Park offers excellent views, granite peaks, and underground caves.
  • Kings Canyon National Park: Adjacent to Sequoia, Kings Canyon features deep canyons, lush meadows, and the impressive 14,494-foot Mount Whitney.
  • Death Valley National Park: Known for its extremes, Death Valley boasts Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, and the colorful Artist's Palette.
  • Redwood National Park: Along California's northern coast, Redwood National Park is home to majestic coastal redwoods, some of the tallest trees on Earth.

So, there you have it, the best guide for first-time travelers in California. Whether you're soaking up the sun in Santa Monica or exploring the sequoias in Yosemite, California is one of the most visited states for good reason. Ready to experience it all?

Best Company Trip I’ve Ever Been On
Reviewed By Ana C - Reno, NV | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
From the moment we landed in Vegas, everything felt effortless. Flights, transfers, and hotel check-in were smooth, and it was clear this trip was extremely well planned. The private dinner at Bourbon Steak was next-level — incredible food, amazing service, and such a special atmosphere for our team. Renting out Swingers Mini Golf for the after-party was such a fun and unexpected touch. Huge credit to Matt for creating an experience that felt both luxurious and genuinely fun. He gave plenty of communication about which flight I was placed on along with a detailed itinerary.
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

Amazing Holiday Incentive Trip
Reviewed By Lydia.P - Austin, TX | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
We cannot say enough great things about Matt and the experience he created for our annual holiday incentive trip in Las Vegas. Planning travel and events for 80 people is no small task, but Matt handled every detail with professionalism, creativity, and total confidence from start to finish. He coordinated all flights, hotel accommodations, and airport transfers seamlessly, making the entire process effortless for our team. The highlights of the trip were absolutely exceptional — a private dinner at Bourbon Steak that felt truly elevated and special, followed by an unforgettable after-party where Matt arranged for us to rent out Swingers Mini Golf. It was the perfect balance of upscale and fun, and our attendees are still talking about it. Matt was proactive, responsive, and always one step ahead, which gave us complete peace of mind throughout the planning process and during the trip itself. If you’re looking for someone who can deliver a flawless, high-impact corporate experience while making it enjoyable and stress-free, Matt is the person you want. Awesome taste of Italy
Reviewed By BV - Pheonix, AZ | Traveled to Italy | Europe
We can’t thank Matt enough for helping make our post-cruise trip to Italy so special. There were six of us traveling together, and he coordinated everything flawlessly—from our car service after the cruise, to train tickets, hotels, and unique experiences like a Vespa tour and a golf cart tour through Rome. The hotels in Rome and Tuscany were beautiful, and every part of the trip ran smoothly thanks to his planning. I have used Matt before and recommend him to my group of friends. We’ll absolutely be using Matt again for future friend trips and recommend him wholeheartedly!
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.
