Water fights in the streets
Water fights in the streets

Step into the vibrant world of Songkran, Thailand's most joyous celebration! Imagine the streets turning into water-filled playgrounds, laughter echoing through the air, and people of all ages coming together for a massive water fight like no other. Songkran is a splash of happiness that marks the Thai New Year with refreshing traditions and infectious smiles.

Rooted in Thai customs and Theravada Buddhism, Songkran has evolved into a nationwide water festival, symbolizing the cleansing of the past year's troubles and welcoming the new year with a clean slate.

But Songkran is more than just getting wet; it's about the Thai culture, partaking in ceremonies, savoring delicacies, and feeling the warmth of community as the entire country comes together.

Grab your goggles! In this article, we'll dive head first into the waters of Songkran, exploring its roots, sharing tips for newcomers, and highlighting the best parts of the festival that make it an experience.

Festival Highlights

Celebrated during the Thai New Year, Songkran is a nationwide water festival that marks a time of cleansing. But it's not all about water guns and buckets of water; and there is a whole lot more in store for those who travel the globe for this anticipated event.

  • Water Fights: Get ready to be drenched in pure joy, where water fights take center stage in an epic aquatic celebration. Imagine entire streets transforming into playful battlegrounds, with visitors armed with water guns and buckets, ready to unleash loads of splashes. The water fights aren't just about getting wet – they're about joining in on the contagious enthusiasm that defines the festival.
  • Colorful Parades: View and participate in the colorful parades featuring music, dance, and beautifully decorated floats, adding a cultural touch to the festivities.
  • Traditional Ceremonies: Participate in or observe the symbolic pouring of scented water on Buddha statues and the hands of elders, signifying respect and renewal.
  • Street Festivities: Bring your appetite and maybe some napkins, and prepare for the street stalls offering delectable Thai delicacies, snacks, and treats.
  • Fireworks Display: End the festival with a beautiful display of fireworks that light up the night sky in celebration.
  • Smiles and Laughter: Experience the best part of the festival: the genuine joy and infectious laughter that creates an atmosphere of celebration and happiness, embracing the entire Thai spirit.

History of Songkran

Once upon a time, in the heart of Southeast Asia, a joyous celebration known as Songkran emerged in the Kingdom of Thailand. This festival, also known as the Thai New Year, has a history as colorful as the splashes of water that define the festivities.

Songkran finds its roots in ancient traditions rooted in Theravada Buddhism. The word "Songkran" comes from the Sanskrit language, meaning "astrological passage," signifying the transition of the sun from one sign of the zodiac to another.

Over centuries, the religious aspects of Songkran blended with the playful spirit of the Thai people. The festival expanded from its spiritual origins to become a nationwide water fight, transforming the hot month of April into a nationwide water party.

The water-throwing tradition originated from the custom of gently pouring scented water over the hands of elders and Buddha statues as a gesture of respect and cleansing. As time passed, this act evolved into the energetic water battles that now define Songkran, with people dousing each other in the streets with water guns.

Today, Songkran has become one of the most anticipated renowned festivals in Thailand, drawing people from all corners of the globe to experience the water-soaked fun.

Best Company Trip I’ve Ever Been On
Reviewed By Ana C - Reno, NV | Traveled to Las Vegas | Nevada | USA
From the moment we landed in Vegas, everything felt effortless. Flights, transfers, and hotel check-in were smooth, and it was clear this trip was extremely well planned. The private dinner at Bourbon Steak was next-level — incredible food, amazing service, and such a special atmosphere for our team. Renting out Swingers Mini Golf for the after-party was such a fun and unexpected touch. Huge credit to Matt for creating an experience that felt both luxurious and genuinely fun. He gave plenty of communication about which flight I was placed on along with a detailed itinerary.

Awesome taste of Italy
Reviewed By BV - Pheonix, AZ | Traveled to Italy | Europe
We can’t thank Matt enough for helping make our post-cruise trip to Italy so special. There were six of us traveling together, and he coordinated everything flawlessly—from our car service after the cruise, to train tickets, hotels, and unique experiences like a Vespa tour and a golf cart tour through Rome. The hotels in Rome and Tuscany were beautiful, and every part of the trip ran smoothly thanks to his planning. I have used Matt before and recommend him to my group of friends. We’ll absolutely be using Matt again for future friend trips and recommend him wholeheartedly!
