My ASTA River Cruise Expo Experience in Vienna
Robin Fishburne
Beaufort, SC Travel Agent· 7 Years of Experience
In March 2025, I traveled from beautiful Beaufort, South Carolina all the way to Vienna, Austria to attend my very first ASTA River Cruise Expo—and what an unforgettable experience it was! As a travel agency owner who specializes in European river cruises, I knew this event would be an incredible learning opportunity. But I had no idea just how transformative it would be.
The ASTA River Cruise Expo is an annual event hosted by the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), designed exclusively for travel advisors. It brings together the world’s leading river cruise companies to showcase their ships, offer hands-on training, share exciting updates, and connect advisors directly with the faces behind the brands. It is, without question, the best way to fully understand, compare, and confidently sell river cruises to clients.
16 Ships, 10 Brands, and 4 Very Full Days
This year’s expo featured 16 ships from 10 major river cruise lines, all docked along the Danube and ready for us to explore. Participating brands included:
AMADEUS – Nova
AmaWaterways – AmaBella, AmaLea, AmaMagna, AmaSonata
Avalon Waterways – Illumination, Passion, Impression
Riverside Luxury Cruises – Mozart
Riviera River Cruises – MS William Wordsworth
Scenic Group – Scenic Opal, Emerald Luna
Tauck – MS Savor
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises – S.S. Maria Theresa
Viking – Rinda, Ingvi
The AmaMagna—one of the most unique ships on the rivers—was available only on Day 1 before sailing out, so I hustled to see her early.
And yes… I was determined to tour all 16 ships in four days, attend educational classes, meet suppliers, and visit the trade show. Add in Vienna’s cold, windy, and rainy March weather—and it was a whirlwind. But I absolutely loved every minute of it.
Dining Across the Danube
One of the most memorable aspects of the expo was the meals. Each breakfast, lunch, and dinner was hosted onboard a different ship, allowing us to sample cuisine from every brand.Let’s just say… nobody goes hungry on a river cruise. From fresh pastries to multicourse wine-paired lunches to beautifully plated dinners, we were spoiled with flavors from every corner of Europe.
Cabin Tours & Christmas Market Magic
Every cruise line opened multiple categories of staterooms for viewing—usually three per ship—so we could compare layouts, design styles, bathrooms, balconies, storage, and amenities. I walked up and down more gangways and staircases than I can count!
One of my favorite surprises was AmaWaterways hosting tours on a ship decorated for Christmas Market sailings. The twinkling garlands, scents of mulled wine, and cozy holiday touches were magical. After stepping aboard, I completely understood why Christmas Market cruises are on so many wish lists.
And yes… I took over 500 photos and videos to bring home to my clients!
Setting Sail on My Post-Expo Avalon Cruise
After four jam-packed days of ship inspections, I shifted gears and boarded my post-expo cruise with Avalon Waterways aboard the gorgeous Avalon Illumination. This sailing—offered exclusively to Travel Leaders Network advisors—ran March 16–23, 2025, and followed a stunning itinerary from Vienna to Budapest, with stops in: Linz, Grein, Melk, Esztergom, Visegrád, and Bratislava. The Avalon team sailed with us, making it an incredible combination of education and relaxation.
Life in a Panorama Suite
My sister joined me for this portion of the trip, and we were absolutely spoiled. Our Panorama Suite, with its wall-to-wall sliding window and the bed facing the river, was pure magic. Each morning we woke up to the Wachau Valley drifting by—storybook villages, terraced vineyards, and hillside castles. It felt like being inside a moving postcard.
Excursions, E-Bikes, Abbeys & Adventure
Avalon’s included excursions turned out to be the highlight of the week. We:Explored the stunning Melk Abbey, E-biked through the countryside to a winery for a tasting, Wandered medieval villages, Visited castles, Sampled local foods and pastries, Shopped for treasures in small towns, Every port felt like a new adventure.
My Final Thoughts
If you love river cruises—or you’re thinking about trying one—the Vienna to Budapest Avalon itinerary is a fantastic choice. The ship, service, suites, excursions, and scenery all exceeded my expectations.
And as a travel advisor, attending the ASTA River Cruise Expo has completely elevated the way I match clients to the perfect river cruise line. There is no substitute for stepping onboard, meeting the teams, tasting the food, and experiencing the ships firsthand.
I am looking forward to helping plan your dream journeys along Europe’s most beautiful rivers.
