There’s no wonder why Italy is one of the top-visited European countries by Americans. It has just about everything a tourist would want…history, culture, geography…and, of course, the food! Of all the ethnic food choices available here in the U.S., Italian must be the No. 1 choice for most folks, and a trip to the home of these culinary delights is considered a “must-do” for Italian food lovers. Nowhere can you best enjoy authentic Italian cooking other than at a quaint sidewalk café in a small, out-of-the-way Italian neighborhood.

Of course, food isn’t the only reason to visit Italy. With the overwhelming historical significance of the country, anyone interested in world history, architecture, religion, or political science will have ample opportunities to expand their personal experiences in these areas. The country is filled with many significant places that have played an important role in developing many of the world’s societies, including ours. Rome, especially, is a key historical city, having once been considered the center of all civilization and ruler of most of the known world. Anyone visiting the “Eternal City” will treasure their time there as a pinnacle of their world travels.

My wife and I have enjoyed Italy on several occasions, each filled with new, exciting and significant encounters with all these mentioned elements. Each visit brought a different experience from those of the past but provided an enhanced insight into this historically-famous country. Of course, our first exposure to the Italian culture was in Rome. Here is where most tourists begin their Italian adventures. With all the critical components for that bucket list visit, Rome offers an overwhelming list of options for just about everyone’s wish list. If this is your destination, plan on spending as much time as possible in this unique city. To really feel that you’ve at least seen the high points, you need to devote a minimum of 3-5 days here, more if you have the time.

Beyond Rome, there’s a multitude of popular destinations that provide their own experiences. Other vital destinations might be Florence, Venice, Naples, or Milan, all well worth a visitor’s consideration for other exceptional Italian encounters. Finally, we have two favorite areas of Italy that are wonderfully exciting and provide an extraordinary experience…Tuscany and Cinque Terre. We believe everyone should make time to spend a day or two in both of these beautiful locals.
