About Me

Making friends in Bali
Making friends in Bali

As a travel specialist covering Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific, I plan trips well beyond my dedicated expertise in Europe, South America and Japan, with firsthand personal travel to Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, the UAE, Jordan, India, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and French Polynesia, and booking experience across most.

In Egypt, standing inside the vividly painted tomb of Seti I remains one of the most striking moments of my travels, and a full day, and overnight, drifting the Nile aboard a traditional felucca gave the country's pace and scale a completely different feel. I also plan luxury Nile river cruises between Luxor and Aswan, and I'm looking forward to returning now that the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Avenue of the Sphinx, both under construction during my visit, have finally opened. In Jordan, walking the narrow canyon into Petra and watching the Treasury slowly reveal itself was as cinematic as it looks in photos. In Morocco, renting a car in Ouarzazate to drive the Draa Valley during spring bloom, hilltop kasbahs above the palm groves, was unforgettable. The UAE's modern architecture, particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, remains genuinely striking in person.

Southern Africa left an equally lasting impression. In South Africa, I biked through the Cape Winelands past historic estates and Cape Dutch architecture, hiked Table Mountain, and in Kruger National Park, watched a lioness emerge from the bush and stood just feet from a bull elephant at a game lodge after dark, its eyes catching the lamplight. I also have booking experience across Kenya and Tanzania's safari circuits, and am planning to lead a group to Tanzania and Rwanda in 2027, ask me for details.

In India, several layovers in Delhi as a flight attendant eventually led me back on my own terms, tracing a route through Agra and Rajasthan. My most indelible memory is Jaisalmer, its honey-colored citadel rising from the desert floor at golden hour, as two women in vivid pink and yellow saris crossed the landscape ahead of me, baskets balanced on their heads, the light through the vivid fabric imprinted in my memory ever since.

China took me to Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai repeatedly as a flight attendant, Hong Kong remains one of my favorite cities anywhere, before an independent trip in fall 2019 took me deeper: a quieter stretch of the Great Wall, the walled town of Pingyao, and Xi'an, home to the Terracotta Army and the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, where the faces, dress and street food hinted at centuries of trade from far beyond China's borders.

Southeast Asia has given me some of my most memorable travel moments. In Bali, I dove the seas to the east, wandered the rice terraces near Ubud, and caught an unexpectedly quiet morning at Tanah Lot during a local holiday procession. In Thailand, I dove alongside a juvenile whale shark, one of the great highlights of my life, and in Cambodia, watched Angkor Wat emerge in silhouette at dawn, a region I can also plan as a Mekong river cruise for clients who prefer to unpack once. Singapore's hawker food markets remain a favorite, and Kuala Lumpur, full of incredible food and architecture including the Batu Caves and Islamic Arts Museum, deserves far more credit than it gets.

In Australia, I've attended Sydney Mardi Gras twice, and explored North Queensland and the Daintree Rainforest before diving the Great Barrier Reef, an extraordinary, fragile treasure worth experiencing. French Polynesia rounds out my Pacific expertise; while I haven't personally stayed in Bora Bora, it's on my bucket list, I've booked clients into its iconic overwater bungalows and know the properties well. I'll also be sailing to the archipelago in September 2027, a region well suited to luxury small-ship cruising.

As a certified premium and luxury ocean and river cruise specialist, I regularly connect these destinations to the right sailing, whether that's the Nile, the Mekong, the South Pacific or a luxury ocean itinerary through the Middle East or Southeast Asia.

If you're searching for a travel specialist for Africa, Asia, Australia or the Pacific near Chicago, Chicagoland, Ohio or the Midwest and Great Lakes region, I work with clients nationwide to plan unforgettable trips well beyond the usual destinations.

A lot for 10 days and loved it!
Reviewed By Alex - Washington, DC | Traveled to Colombia | South America
Ryan helped us plan for a 10 day trip to Colombia where we visited three cities in September 2025. The thought of having to plan multiple flights, hotel stays, eateries AND tours felt daunting for us. I mean we could have done it, but we knew that Ryan has been there many times and so we wanted to take advantage of that experience. He was amazing with the hotel selections and tour experiences. I'm not sure I would have found those eclectic boutique hotels myself; it felt special. All the tour guides were smart, friendly, funny, helpful and a pleasure to tour with. We had one mix-up with a full day city tour, but Ryan was very helpful in resolving it - quick to reply to our messages and sort out alternative options. I think it's important to have someone who knows how to handle the bumpy parts of travel, too. We still made it to the tour, happily! I feel like I experienced a great vacation with Ryan's help. Thank you, thank you!

The Perfect Trip to Italy
Reviewed By Dan - Columbus, OH | Traveled to Italy ~ Europe
Ryan and Avid Nomad Travel helped us plan a trip of a lifetime to Italy and Spain. Twice-postponed due to the pandemic, Ryan was extremely communicative throughout the process and even helped us make some last minute adjustments. The hotels, the tours, and the transfers we had were all spectacular and definitely not something we could have pieced together ourselves in such a perfect way. Thanks, Ryan!
Ryan Cowden responded
"Thanks Dan! Glad you were finally able to get there and enjoyed your time exploring! Looking forward to the next adventure!"

Making Lifetime Memories
Reviewed By Kate - Columbus Ohio | Traveled to Italy ~ Europe
Ryan did an amazing job planning and assisting my family through our trip to Italy. He was able to plan an itinerary for my family to keep everyone happy, which is no small feat.

Not only was the planning a smooth process, Ryan made himself available throughout our trip to help when we encountered snafu’s, like our connecting flight being cancelled the morning we were to leave for our trip. Ryan was on the ball and had us re-routed in no time.

Thankfully once we arrived in Italy everything went off without a hitch. The directions were detailed and accurate and we were able to spend time together and make memories of a lifetime.

Two weeks in Europe
Reviewed By Aj456 - Waco, TX | Traveled to Europe
Ryan put together a dream trip for my daughter's high school graduation trip. She had wanted to see the Paris/The Eiffel Tower since she was a little girl. We had two weeks of time, and the only thing we knew we had to do was see the Eiffel Tower. Ryan spoke to both of us separately about the trip and what we wanted out of it. We ended up flying to London, taking the train to Paris, then on to Brugge, and finally Amsterdam. We loved getting picked up from the airport/train stations and driven straight to our hotels. It was definitely nice when we were exhausted after our long overnight flight. All of our hotel stays were wonderful. They were all located close to public transit, clean, all had air conditioning, and breakfast included. The staff was friendly and helpful at each of our stays. We took several tours, Tower of London, Seine River, Stonehenge and Bath, a city night drive in a Citreon through Paris, tours of Versailles, Notre Dame, The Louvre, Brugge, and the canals of Amsterdam. We also had afternoon tea in London and baked croissants in Paris. All of our tours and group activities were done in small groups, and we often had early access before the crowds were let it. All of our guides were funny and knowledgeable. We went to a show one night in London and had excellent seats. We were assigned a travel angel while in Europe that we could reach out to if there were any issues, which we did utilize a few times. He always responded quickly and helped us to solve any problems we had. In addition, Ryan was very helpful when our flight was cancelled and we ended up with an extra day in Amsterdam. This was the first vacation we booked with Ryan, and by the third day, we both knew we were in great hands. The tours, hotels, and experiences were well chosen, and felt special. We will definitely book future vacations through Ryan and Avid Nomad Travel, and will be recommending for our friends and family to do the same.

UK Here We Come!
Reviewed By FansinceK - Carrollton,Ohio | Traveled to United Kingdom | Europe
Ryan was very helpful with the planning of our trip. In January we even changed the scope of our trip and Ryan got it all squared away with Globus and Cosmos. Everything he set up went flawlessly. I’m not secure with all the digital things I had to do on my end but Ryan patiently answered all my questions and calmed my nerves. We had a wonderful trip thanks to Ryan’s skills. During our trip he’d check up on how things were going. We were on our own in London a couple of days before our bus trip and the list of some of his favorite places was very helpful.
