About Me

Egyptian adventure, 2021
Egyptian adventure, 2021

I specialize in connecting curious travelers with meaningful, immersive experiences, not just checking boxes on a map, but genuinely learning something about the places they visit. With so much conflicting information online, from outdated blog posts to algorithm-driven "best of" lists, sorting out what's actually worth your time in a destination can take almost as much effort as the trip itself. That's where decades of firsthand experience make the difference.

My expertise comes from decades of firsthand travel: I've explored all seven continents, visited more than 60 countries, and speak both Spanish and Portuguese. I lived in London for nearly four years, giving me an insider's perspective on European travel, and today I plan trips most frequently to Italy, Spain, France, the UK and Portugal, drawing on years of firsthand experience across each of these destinations. I've also returned to Brazil more than 20 times over the past 30+ years, often staying a month or longer at a time, and since 2018 have spent two to three months in Colombia during winter seasons, along with numerous trips to Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Peru.

As a Europe travel specialist and a South America travel expert with lived experiences, I design itineraries for travelers who want to understand a destination's culture, history and cuisine from the inside, not just see it from a bus window. Coordinating multi-country logistics, matching the right region to the right season, and separating a genuinely worthwhile experience from an overhyped one is where I do the heavy lifting so my clients don't have to.

One of my specialties is designing immersive, once-in-a-lifetime journeys built around learning, culture and hands-on discovery, trips to destinations travelers have dreamed about for years, planned around a region's food, art, history or natural landscape, often paired with active, outdoor experiences like hiking. Whether it's trekking in Patagonia, exploring a UNESCO World Heritage city on foot, relaxing in an onsen after a day exploring Japan's temples and gardens, or tasting your way through a region's local cuisine, I build itineraries around genuine curiosity, not just a checklist of sights, using supplier relationships and destination knowledge that aren't available with a search engine alone.

I'm also a certified specialist in premium and luxury ocean cruises, expedition cruises, and river cruises, matching travelers to the ship, line and itinerary that fits how they actually want to experience a destination, a decision with more variables than most travelers realize until they're already booked. For travelers who prefer an all-inclusive resort, I work selectively with a small number of upscale resort brands rather than broad, budget-focused options.

Based in Chicago, I work with clients throughout Chicagoland, Ohio, and the greater Midwest and Great Lakes region, as well as travelers nationwide who want a travel advisor with real, firsthand knowledge of where they're headed, not secondhand recommendations pulled from a search results page.

A lot for 10 days and loved it!
Reviewed By Alex - Washington, DC | Traveled to Colombia | South America
Ryan helped us plan for a 10 day trip to Colombia where we visited three cities in September 2025. The thought of having to plan multiple flights, hotel stays, eateries AND tours felt daunting for us. I mean we could have done it, but we knew that Ryan has been there many times and so we wanted to take advantage of that experience. He was amazing with the hotel selections and tour experiences. I'm not sure I would have found those eclectic boutique hotels myself; it felt special. All the tour guides were smart, friendly, funny, helpful and a pleasure to tour with. We had one mix-up with a full day city tour, but Ryan was very helpful in resolving it - quick to reply to our messages and sort out alternative options. I think it's important to have someone who knows how to handle the bumpy parts of travel, too. We still made it to the tour, happily! I feel like I experienced a great vacation with Ryan's help. Thank you, thank you!

The Perfect Trip to Italy
Reviewed By Dan - Columbus, OH | Traveled to Italy ~ Europe
Ryan and Avid Nomad Travel helped us plan a trip of a lifetime to Italy and Spain. Twice-postponed due to the pandemic, Ryan was extremely communicative throughout the process and even helped us make some last minute adjustments. The hotels, the tours, and the transfers we had were all spectacular and definitely not something we could have pieced together ourselves in such a perfect way. Thanks, Ryan!
Ryan Cowden responded
"Thanks Dan! Glad you were finally able to get there and enjoyed your time exploring! Looking forward to the next adventure!"

Making Lifetime Memories
Reviewed By Kate - Columbus Ohio | Traveled to Italy ~ Europe
Ryan did an amazing job planning and assisting my family through our trip to Italy. He was able to plan an itinerary for my family to keep everyone happy, which is no small feat.

Not only was the planning a smooth process, Ryan made himself available throughout our trip to help when we encountered snafu’s, like our connecting flight being cancelled the morning we were to leave for our trip. Ryan was on the ball and had us re-routed in no time.

Thankfully once we arrived in Italy everything went off without a hitch. The directions were detailed and accurate and we were able to spend time together and make memories of a lifetime.

Two weeks in Europe
Reviewed By Aj456 - Waco, TX | Traveled to Europe
Ryan put together a dream trip for my daughter's high school graduation trip. She had wanted to see the Paris/The Eiffel Tower since she was a little girl. We had two weeks of time, and the only thing we knew we had to do was see the Eiffel Tower. Ryan spoke to both of us separately about the trip and what we wanted out of it. We ended up flying to London, taking the train to Paris, then on to Brugge, and finally Amsterdam. We loved getting picked up from the airport/train stations and driven straight to our hotels. It was definitely nice when we were exhausted after our long overnight flight. All of our hotel stays were wonderful. They were all located close to public transit, clean, all had air conditioning, and breakfast included. The staff was friendly and helpful at each of our stays. We took several tours, Tower of London, Seine River, Stonehenge and Bath, a city night drive in a Citreon through Paris, tours of Versailles, Notre Dame, The Louvre, Brugge, and the canals of Amsterdam. We also had afternoon tea in London and baked croissants in Paris. All of our tours and group activities were done in small groups, and we often had early access before the crowds were let it. All of our guides were funny and knowledgeable. We went to a show one night in London and had excellent seats. We were assigned a travel angel while in Europe that we could reach out to if there were any issues, which we did utilize a few times. He always responded quickly and helped us to solve any problems we had. In addition, Ryan was very helpful when our flight was cancelled and we ended up with an extra day in Amsterdam. This was the first vacation we booked with Ryan, and by the third day, we both knew we were in great hands. The tours, hotels, and experiences were well chosen, and felt special. We will definitely book future vacations through Ryan and Avid Nomad Travel, and will be recommending for our friends and family to do the same.

UK Here We Come!
Reviewed By FansinceK - Carrollton,Ohio | Traveled to United Kingdom | Europe
Ryan was very helpful with the planning of our trip. In January we even changed the scope of our trip and Ryan got it all squared away with Globus and Cosmos. Everything he set up went flawlessly. I’m not secure with all the digital things I had to do on my end but Ryan patiently answered all my questions and calmed my nerves. We had a wonderful trip thanks to Ryan’s skills. During our trip he’d check up on how things were going. We were on our own in London a couple of days before our bus trip and the list of some of his favorite places was very helpful.

Experience a Ryokan in Japan

One of the must do highlights during a visit to Japan is to fully experience an overnight stay at a traditional inn called a Ryokan. On my recent trip to Japan, I stayed in two of them, one modern multi-floor building in Kanazawa and another, a single level historic inn centered on a garden in Kyoto's super atmospheric Gion district. ...
