I had the privilege of escorting a group on an unforgettable 12-Day Viking Nile River Cruise Tour

Cairo

Cairo is a city of contrasts — ancient and modern; bustling and serene. The city was alive with cars, pedestrians, and even carts pulled by donkeys, all sharing the same streets.

On our first full day in Cairo, we visited two UNESCO sites: Saqqara and the Citadel of Saladin. These monuments left me in awe. Standing before such ancient history, I found myself reflecting on the stories in the Bible, and the countless people whose labor built these extraordinary structures.

On our second day, we explored the Grand Egyptian Museum, the iconic Pyramids of Giza, and the Great Sphinx. Each site deepened our appreciation for the ancient history of Egypt.

Nile River Cruise - Luxor

On day three, we flew to Luxor to begin our 7-night cruise. Our first stop was the Karnak Temple—the intricately carved columns, towering statues, and hieroglyphics  took our breath away. That evening, our crew greeted us as we boarded our home for the next seven nights: the beautiful Viking Amun; docked directly across from Karnak Temple.

The Magic of the Nile

We were up at 4:00 AM the next morning for one of the trip's most unforgettable moments: a hot air balloon ride over Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. Floating above the Valley of the Kings as the sun rose over the west bank was breathtaking—our entire group agreed it was a highlight of the journey.

Over the following six days, we visited the Aswan High Dam, a traditional Nubian village, and explored several ancient temples and royal tombs — including those of King Tutankhamun, Hatshepsut, and Seti. We walked through local villages and bustling markets, where we purchased traditional gallabiyahs to wear during our Egyptian night celebration aboard ship.  On board we attended lecture, participated in a cooking class and enjoyed nightly entertainment.

Throughout our voyage, we gained a deeper understanding of the Nile's vital role in Egyptian life—as a source of water, irrigation for crops, and a lifeline for transportation. We saw Lake Nasser and learned how the Aswan High Dam (completed in 1970) regulates water flow for hydroelectric power and agricultural irrigation. Some of our group took a day excursion to Abu Simbel to visit the temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari.

Beyond the historical sites, we experienced authentic moments that made the journey truly extraordinary.  We had fun negotiating with merchants selling handmade cotton tablecloths from small rowing boats attached to the side of our ship in Edna.   On our felucca sailing we were serenaded by our captain and local children who attached their surf board to the felucca. Spontaneously our group broke into dance on the felucca, and as we approached the dock and saw the Viking group team waiting for us, our tour director jokingly whispered “what’s done on the Nile, stays on the Nile”.  These unscripted encounters reminded us why travel is so special.

Travel changes how you see the world and your place in it.

Egypt left me in awe and yearning to return. I cherished the time we had to meet and interact with the local people, and learn about life in Egypt — both ancient and contemporary.

From exploring magnificent museums, temples, and pyramids to experiencing the timeless beauty of the Nile, every day brought something extraordinary.  It wasn't just the world-class accommodations and dining, or our dedicated crew and knowledgeable Egyptologists — it was the way every element came together to create an experience that honored both the destination and the new bonds formed among our fellow travelers.

Exploring Egypt's incredible history together, then returning to the peaceful rhythm of the river, gave us time to reflect, laugh, and truly connect. The entire trip was flawless, thanks to our Egyptologist, ship crew, ground staff, and security team. No detail was left unattended.
